Department Of Communication

The Communication Department offers two fields of study: Communication Studies and Public Relations. The majors examine how humans make and interpret meaning through the design, delivery and evaluation of messages as individuals, in media, and in various cultures. While Communication Studies focuses on the impact of these messages on the individual, the Public Relations major examines the communication between organizations and their various publics. Both programs emphasize analytical thinking, writing and oral expression. In addition, majors are required to complete an internship which creates a bridge between theory and applied knowledge. Students in both majors graduate with a broad background upon which to base graduate study in areas such as communication, organizational behavior, or public relations. Others apply their knowledge and skills to careers in communication, business, public relations, media, or service-oriented fields.

Non-majors, as well as majors, are encouraged to benefit from a flexible program of courses and co-curricular activities. Students may consult with any departmental faculty to select courses which may prove helpful in achieving individual goals. Majors and minors within the department may not be combined.

Both major programs are built upon six core courses. Students undecided about a major may take these courses before selecting their particular major. The six courses that make up the core are: COMM 111, 230, 318, 320, 327 and an internship (495 or 496).
