Communication DepartmentThe Department of Communication offers several related major and minor programs providing theory and experiences in all aspects of interpersonal and audience-oriented interactions, media, and public relations. All programs emphasize the development of analytical thinking, writing and oral expression. Students will graduate with a broad background upon which to base graduate study in areas such as communication, organizational behavior, or public relations. Others may apply their knowledge and skills to careers in communication, business, public relations, media, or service-oriented fields.
The Communication Department offers two fields of study: Communication Studies and Public Relations. The majors examine how humans make and interpret meaning through the design, delivery, and evaluation of messages as individuals, in media, and in various cultures. While Communication Studies focuses on the impact of these messages on the individual, the Public Relations major examines the communication between organizations and their various publics. Both programs emphasize analytical thinking, writing and oral expression. In addition, majors are required to complete and internship which creates a bridge between theory and applied knowledge.
Non-majors, as well as majors, are encouraged to benefit from the flexible program of courses and co-curricular activities. Students are encouraged to participate in both the student run newspaper "The Pharos", and C-92 F.M., Wesleyan's campus radio station. Students may also consult with any departmental faculty to select courses that may prove helpful in achieving their individual goals.
