Department Of Physics and Engineering

We offer two degrees: the B.S. in Physics and the B.A. in Physics. A full range of physics courses supports our physics programs. Modern lab equipment enables our distinctive approach, which emphasizes hands-on physics.

Two popular careers today that physics graduates can enter into are Medical Physics and Geophysics. Both are in great demand and have starting salaries in the range of $70,000-100,000 with a Master's Degree. A medical physicist applies scientific knowledge and technological skills to diagnose and treat many kinds of health conditions, working as the technological colleague to the physician in large medical complexes. A geophysicist measures, examines, and explores the physical properties of the earth, aiding in the search for oil, natural gas, and valuable minerals. Graduates in physics can also work in research laboratories or teach at the high school or college level. A physics degree from Wesleyan provides excellent preparation for graduate school in Medical Physics, Geophysics, and Physics.

Engineering students are encouraged to enroll in our Dual-Degree program. The Dual-Degree program enables a student to earn two degrees in a total of about 5 years. One of these degrees will be the B.A. in Physics from Wesleyan, and the other will be an engineering degree from an affiliated university (either a B.S. in Engineering from West Virginia University or an M.S. in Engineering from the University of Virginia).

Dual-Degree students complete Wesleyan's required courses in 3 years. At the beginning of Year 4, they transfer to the chosen university, where they take engineering courses. This coursework will transfer back to complete the requirements for the Wesleyan degree. The student returns to the university for a fifth year to complete the requirements for the engineering degree.

Dual-Degree students may select from the following fields:

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Systems Engineering
  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Materials Science
  • Biomedical Engineering

  • 7.13.05
