Department of Communication

The Communication Department offers two majors: communication studies and public relations. The majors examine how humans determine and interpret meaning through the design, delivery, and evaluation of messages as individuals, in media, and in various cultures. While communication studies focuses on the impact of these messages on the individual, the public relations major examines the studentscommunication between organizations and their various publics.

The programs emphasize:

  • analytical thinking
  • writing
  • oral expression

Majors are required to complete an internship which creates a bridge between theory and applied knowledge.

The National Communication Association (NCA) awarded West Virginia Wesleyan College 's Communication Department the 2003 Rex Mix Program of Excellence Award. The “Rex Mix” recognizes communication departments with a strong curriculum and a broad student engagement and enrichment opportunities such as internships, service learning experiences, and student/faculty research.

Communication Department’s Mission: Overall our programs provide theory and experiences in all aspects of interpersonal and audience-oriented interactions, media, and public relations. All programs emphasize the development of analytical thinking, writing and oral expression, and the application of theory and research to experience. We intend that students will graduate with a broad background upon which to base graduate study in areas such as communication, organizational behavior, or public relations. Others may apply their knowledge and skills to careers in communication, business, public relations, media, or service-oriented fields.
