2003-2004 Institutional Report

 

West Virginia Wesleyan College offers a fully accredited, state approved program to prepare future teachers for the nation and state’s schools.  The West Virginia Department of Education established a pass rate of 100 percent for all graduates completing state approved teacher preparation programs.  West Virginia Wesleyan College achieved a 100 percent pass rate for the 40 program completers of the institution’s programs from September 1, 2002 through August 31, 2003 .  Highlights of West Virginia Wesleyan College ’s program include the following  

In 1890, West Virginia Wesleyan College was established.

In 1901, the teacher education program was established at West Virginia Wesleyan College .

The institution places teacher education candidates in a total of 16 public schools to complete various field experiences and student teaching.  Of these public schools, 56% percent qualify for Title I services.  Furthermore, 21% percent of students enrolled in these 9 public schools receive special education services.

Currently, 260 teacher candidates are enrolled in the teacher education program.

Between September 1, 2002 and August 31, 2003 , 33 individuals completed the teacher education program.

During the same time period, 38 teacher candidates were enrolled in student teaching.

Prior to student teaching, teacher candidates complete a minimum of 105 clock hours of field experiences related to their preparation program.

Student Teaching requires 13- weeks, 470 clock hours, of supervised classroom teaching.

There are currently 6 full-time faculty members and 3 part-time faculty members who supervise student teaching.

The teacher candidate/supervising faculty ratio is 4.2 teacher candidates to 1 supervising faculty.
