Master of Education in Athletic Training

The five year master's degree in athletic training from West Virginia Wesleyan College is designed as a maximally time efficient mechanism by which students can obtain a Master's Degree in Education (M.Ed.) in addition to nationally recognized certifications as a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC), Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), and Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT-B). The major strength of this program is the fact that the student may complete all of this training in a five year plan of study.

Specifically, the program is structured as a 4 + 1 plan of study. The student matriculates from the undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training at the end of the traditional fourth year, and upon graduation, is automatically eligible for placement in the graduate program for the fifth year. Graduation from the undergraduate program does not automatically guarantee clinical graduate assistantship placements, as they are competitive and will be awarded based on the strength of the application each year.

Major milestones within this plan are as follows:

  • At the beginning of the second year of study (sophomore year), the student will have already sat for the national exam to become a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT-B), thus allowing them to work anywhere in the U.S. as an EMT.

  • During the spring of the junior or senior year, the student will complete course content that prepares them to sit for the NSCA national certification exam to become a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).

  • At the end of the senior year, the undergraduate student will be eligible to sit for the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) examination to become a Certified Athletic Trainer.

  • Upon successful completion of the graduate year, the student will be awarded the Master of Education in Athletic Training Degree.
