Trustees Approve Addition to Science Building

In their 2007 Homecoming meeting, Wesleyan's Board of Trustees voted to move forward on the planned expansion of Christopher Hall of Science. Groundbreaking will occur on May 2, 2008.

The addition will be named the Reemsnyder Research Pavilion, in honor of David Reemsynder, a longtime Wesleyan professor. The additon will contain modern classroom facilities, research laboratories, and faculty offices.

President Pamela Balch discussed the exciting news. "We believe the construction of this facility will be attractive to prospective students," said Balch. She also praised the work of the trustees in making the project possible.

Board Chairman Lloyd Jackson added his enthusiasm for the building effort. "We are extremely proud of our placement rate in graduate and medical school and the success of our engineering and physics graduates. This facility will allow us to strengthen already one of the best undergraduate science programs in the state," he said.

The project was initiated with help from a federal grant secured through the office Senator Robert C. Byrd. The total cost of the 23,000 square-foot addition will be $8 million. About $2 million remains to be raised.

Artecon of Wexford, Pa., was selected as the architectural firm for the project, which is expected to be completed during the 2009-2010 academic year.
