Winter Sports in Full Swing

With the holiday break over, West Virginia Wesleyan’s three winter sports teams are now back on the courts and in the swimming pools in full force.

The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats under coach Steve Tierney are off to a solid start in with a 7-4 record overall and 2-0 in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC). Senior forward-center Francis Carvajal is leading the team, averaging just over 20 points and nine rebounds per game while sophomore guard Sarah Grab is second in scoring at 15 points per game. The Lady Bobcats have completed their non-conference schedule and will now focus on the WVIAC. They will return to action Thursday, January 13 at 5:30 p.m. when they travel to Fairmont State.

Following a tough stretch early in the season, the Bobcats and coach Charlie Miller are off to a good start in 2005. The Bobcats took heavily favored Salem International into overtime before falling 92-90 on January 8. The momentum from that game carried over into their January 10 home game with Ohio Valley. Senior forward Lynell Ingram scored a game-high 27 points to give the Bobcats their first win of the season with an 88-74 victory. Ingram and senior forward Jelani Watson are both scoring in double-digits, with Ingram averaging 18 points per game and Watson averaging 13 per game. Like the women, the men's team completed their non-conference schedule. They will focus their attention to the WVIAC schedule, playing Fairmont State Thursday, January 13 at 8 p.m. in Fairmont.

The Wesleyan Lady Bobcat and Bobcat swimmers had a strong performance in December. The women finished sixth in the Longnecker Invitational at Grove City College and defeated Fairmont State University in an important WVIAC dual meet, 105-45. The men placed fourth in the Longnecker Invitational and edged Fairmont State in the dual meet, 121-77.
The swim teams will travel to Salem International for a meet Saturday, January 15.
