Athletic Update

The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat and Bobcat basketball teams both had representation on the All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) teams. For the Lady ‘Cats, senior Frances Carvajal was named to the All-WVIAC First Team for the 2004-2005 season while sophomore Sarah Grab was named to the All-WVIAC Second Team. Carvajal led the team and was second in the conference in scoring, averaging 19.8 points per game. She led the conference in rebounding with 11.6 boards per game. Grab was second on the team and fifth in the conference in scoring, averaging 17.7 points per game. The Lady ‘Cats ended the regular season with a 16-11 record overall and finished fifth in the WVIAC. They opened the WVIAC Tournament on Monday, February 28 with a first-round 76-51 home victory over Ohio Valley College. In Charleston, on Wednesday, March 1, the Lady Bobcat season came to an end with a 68-46 loss to Wheeling Jesuit in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

The Bobcat men’s team had one player receive conference honors. Senior Lynell Ingram was named to the All-WVIAC Second Team. Ingram led the Bobcats in scoring and was sixth in the conference, averaging 20.4 points per game. He led the conference in rebounding with 9.5 rebounds per game. The regular season ended on a high note for the ‘Cats as they defeated the Shepherd Rams 94-83 on senior night. The basketball season came to a disappointing end for the men with a 107-98 loss in an opening round clash in the WVIAC tournament to West Liberty State.

The West Virginia Wesleyan swim teams ended their season in the Blue Grass Mountain/WVIAC Championships on February 16-20. The men finished fourth out of eight teams while the women wound up sixth among 12 teams.

The spring athletic season is ready to begin, but Mother Nature is not cooperating. Randy Tenney ’77 and his baseball team were to have opened their season on Tuesday, March 1 with a doubleheader against Davis & Elkins but had that game postponed because of the weather. They will try again this Saturday, March 4 when they travel to West Virginia State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Steve Warner ’90 and his softball team were scheduled to get their season underway on February 26, but again the weather forced a postponement. They will try again on Thursday, March 3 with a home doubleheader against Lake Superior State First-year coach Lee Underwood and his men’s tennis team were able to get in their first match on February 13, but lost a tough 5-4 contest to Sinclair College. They will be back in action on Saturday, March 5 in a home contest with Wayne State. Jesse Skiles and his Bobcat and Lady Bobcat track and field squads begin their outdoor season March 12 at Washington & Lee University, while John Barbour and his golf team will visit Hilton Head, SC March 10-15 for some action at Haig Point.

What I enjoy about playing basketball/playing on the basketball team? I love being a part of this basketball team. The team became my family the first week I was here, and it's been the same every year after. I am just happy that I can end my playing career in the sport I love, with the ladies who are great, and the memories that will never be forgotten.

Why I chose Wesleyan? I chose Wesleyan the first time I was on the campus for a recruiting trip. I loved the team and the campus (it was during the fall season), and I just knew that I wanted to come here.

What I like best about Wesleyan? I like Wesleyan’s small campus. I have made a lot of friendships through the years. No matter where you are, there was always a friend to help you out, or just be there for you.

Plans after college? After college, I hope to pursue a career in Health Education. I also would like to coach.
