Emeritus Club Reaches $250,000 Goal for Performing Arts Center Lobby

The Emeritus Club, a group comprised of over 700 alumni members whose classes graduated from Wesleyan 50 years or more, has successfully completed its $250,000 goal for the Virginia Thomas Law Center for the Performing Arts. Through the Club’s support, the bu
ilding’s main lobby will be named for the Emeritus Club.

The gift that elevated the Emeritus Club beyond their goal was a contribution by Dr. Fred Standley ’54 and his wife Dr. Jayne Standley of Tallahassee, FL. According to Harold Elmore, coordinator of the Emeritus Club, Dr. Standley observed after reading the March Emeritus Club newsletter that $4,400 would complete the initiative for the lobby. He immediately e-mailed a pledge to the College that same day allowing the Emeritus Club to meet its $250,000 goal.

“I feel the new Virginia Thomas Law Center for the Performing Arts," remarks Dr. Standley, "Will be a lasting contribution to the intellectual and cultural life of Wesleyan.”

As of May 1, the total amount committed to the lobby was $254,000. Approximately 215 Emeritus Club members have provided over 400 gifts toward the lobby project. A wall plaque with donors names will be placed in the lobby.

The current 2005-2006 Emeritus Club Officers are: President, Robert S. Gay ’50; Vice President, Peggy Martin Dorsey ’48; Secretary, Ruth Reeder Myers ’45; Treasurer and Director of Alumni Relations, Timothy L. Channell, MBA ‘03 and Immediate Past President, Mary Coberly Marquess ’48. The directors are: Edith M. Logsdon ’51, 2006; Agnes Tenney Payne ‘50, 2007; William M. Brown ’50, 2008; Robert L. Gould ’52, 2009 and Richard E. Conaway ’52, 2010.

Additionally, the Emeritus Club contributed $1,000 toward the Wesleyan class of 2005 senior gift. The senior gift will be a portion of a new "senior" gate to the Senior Walk. The gate will be directly across from College Avenue and the new Virginia Thomas Law Center for Performing Arts as an entrance to the Senior Walk leading to the Administration Building.

If you would like to make a gift toward the performing arts center, please call the Advancement Office at (304) 473-8540 or (800) 768-8264, e-mail makeagift@wvwc.edu, or make a gift through the College’s secure website.

Athletic Department Seeking Hall of Fame Nominations

The West Virginia Wesleyan College Athletic Department established its Hall of Fame in 1996. Each year, four individuals or a team will be selected from the nominees that have been submitted to the department by Wesleyan alumni and friends.

We are asking for your nominations for the Hall of Fame. Your nominations may be mailed to Dr. George Klebez, 59 College Avenue, Buckhannon, WV 26201. Please list the name of your nominee, what year he/she graduated, what sport(s) he/she played, and any other important details about their athletic career.

Eligible nominees are former Wesleyan athletes who have not been on an active roster at any time during the past 10 years (anyone graduating prior to 1996 is eligible) and any long-time supporters and contributors to Wesleyan athletics.

The Hall of Fame recipients are each year honored at Homecoming. A beautiful bronze plaque with the recipient’s nameplate is hung in the lobby of the John D. Rockefeller Physical Education Building.
