Hoover Selected As Herndon Fellow
Internships
provide West Virginia Wesleyan students with an educational experience
beyond the classroom. During the spring semester, Keith Hoover, a senior
political science major from Hurricane, WV, served as a Judith A. Herndon
Legislative Fellow in the West Virginia Legislature. Hoover worked on
the staff of West Virginia Senator and minority leader, Vic Sprouse.

The
Judith A. Herndon Legislative Fellows Program is an internship sponsored
by the West Virginia Legislature for undergraduate students from West
Virginia colleges and universities. Hoover was nominated by Wesleyan
professor of history and political science, Dr. Robert Rupp.
“After nomination, I was interviewed by the fellowship program’s
intern committee,” states Hoover. “The selection of Fellows
is made from a pool of nominees, and I was fortunate to be one of 10
students selected.”
Herndon Fellows were given an orientation to state government, and had
an opportunity to meet with Governor Joe Manchin. Fellows also met with
the directors of executive departments and with legislative staff. Hoover’s
work during the fellowship period included legislative research, bill
drafting, and committee staff responsibilities.
One of the highlights during Hoover’s internship was spending
a day with Gov. Manchin in North Central West Virginia. The trip included
a stop at Wesleyan. “It was a busy day, but a rewarding day as
well,” remarks Hoover. “Overall, the fellowship was an excellent
extension of my educational experience at Wesleyan. Each day I was able
to seek out new opportunities, build new relationships, and cultivate
existing ones.”
Following graduation, Hoover plans to attend law school and eventually
build a career in government and politics.
Greetings
from Your Library: Library Website
On
the Library Website, there are many resources that are freely available
to Wesleyan alumni! It is true that some items on the library website
are available only to current students, faculty, and staff. These are
marked with a bobcat paw, and are databases to which we pay a subscription
fee. But there is plenty there for you as well.
You may
link directly to the library home page at http://www.wvwc.edu/lib/.
There is not enough room here to mention everything, so this month we
will highlight just a few items. Please feel free to explore!
Under
the section called "Find Books," you will find our catalog
and some electronic books that are available full-text on the internt.
Nearly all of the Find Electronic Resources will be useful to you, especially
the eReference section. Here you will find everything from Census resources
and almanacs to a calculator for exchanging currency. To find even more
resources that may be specific to your interests, click on Library Subject
eReference Categories at the top of the page.
If you
are homesick for the Annie Merner Pfeiffer Library, go to the Library
Services section and take our Virtual Tour.
