When
I see the blooming of flowers and budding of trees each spring, I reflect
on the new growth I experienced during my student years at West Virginia
Wesleyan College. My husband, Don Smallwood ’80, and I gained so
much from Wesleyan, and we were overjoyed when our son, Wesley, chose
to attend Wesleyan.
Over the past year, I have served as Secretary of Wesleyan’s Alumni Council. In that time, I have developed a new appreciation for the many ways alumni assist the College – student recruiting, career advising, sponsoring interns, attending College events, and giving financial support. The list could go on, but I want to focus on the importance of alumni financial support. Alumni participation in giving helps Wesleyan meet its operating expenses in areas like scholarships, faculty salaries, equipment purchases, and campus maintenance – all of the things students like Wesley need to achieve their own hopes and dreams. Alumni participation also is an important factor in receiving gifts and grants from corporations and foundations. What does it take to participate? Your gift! The amount of your gift may range from $5 to $50 to $500, $5000 or more. It is not what you give, but that you give that builds alumni participation. I have experienced Wesleyan as a student, as an alumna, as an Alumni Council member and officer, and now as the parent of a current student. I know Wesleyan is “My Home Among the Hills,” and I hope you believe it is your home, too. If you have not already done so, I hope you also will step forward with your gift to Wesleyan before June 30. Your participation will be greatly appreciated. Blessings of Spring
