Left to Right: The Lyon family - 2005 Bobcat Open Champions
Bobcat Open Review

West Virginia Wesleyan College hosted their 10th annual Bobcat Open golf tournament on June 20 at the Pete Dye Golf Course in Bridgeport. This year’s event was host to over 65 golfers.

With perfect conditions for golf and a lavish setting on one of the most scenic and highly rated courses in the eastern United States, Wesleyan alumni and friends enjoyed a day of camaraderie.

The day ended with a great dinner and awards ceremony held in the main dining facility at the Pete Dye Club house.

Following the 18 holes of scramble format, this year’s winners were Carl Lyon '49, Billy Lyon '47, Mark Lyon, and Jack Lyon '49. Earning runner-up honors was the foursome of Will Armstead, Zach Mendelson, Jared Ramsey, and Ken Ramsey. Tying for third place was the team of Tom Betras, John Bohman, Rich Mamula, and Kirk Parsons and the trio of David Gilbert, Donald Gilbert, and Steve Tierney.

Earning Closest to the Pin awards were Todd Whitehair (4th hole), Tom Betras (7th hole), and Rich Sheridan (13th hole). The Longest Drive awards went to Kirk Parsons (5th hole) and Ed Yablowski (18th hole).

“What a wonderful day!” remarked Tim Channell, Director of Alumni Relations, “We are so pleased that we are able to provide this opportunity for alumni and friends to spend time together and to be able to raise funds for our Annual Fund. Our alumni and guests had a great afternoon of golf in a superb setting.”

Wesleyan Needs Your Help
Did you know that gifts of any size make a big impact when Wesleyan measures alumni participation? Many alumni believe that only large gifts make a difference but this is not the case.

Each year, colleges and universities report data relative to the receipt of gifts, including the participation rate of its alumni. College guides, such as U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges, use the participation rate as a measure of alumni confidence and to ensure their alma mater adheres to its goals and mission. Ranking as a Best College can impact whether a prospective student considers enrollment or if foundations and corporations award support.

When a West Virginia Wesleyan College graduate makes a gift - no matter the size - they are investing in their alma mater and bettering the lives of the young men and women who attend Wesleyan today. Last fiscal year, Wesleyan reached a 23% alumni participation rate, the highest in over 10 years. This year’s goal is to reach 25% alumni participation (3,325 alumni donors). Currently, Wesleyan needs 455 more alumni to make a gift before June 30th to reach this goal.

Remember, the size of the gift is not as important as the act of making a gift. Please help keep the “Wesleyan Experience” alive. Make your gift now on our secure server at http://www.wvwc.edu/alu/makeagift.htm.
