Athletic Update

Athletic Teams Gear Up for Fall Season

One of the most dominant athletic programs within the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) is ready to take center stage again. As the winner of the prestigious WVIAC Commissioner’s Cup for the 14th consecutive year, the 2005-06 Wesleyan athletic teams will look to dominate the conference once again this year.

The volleyball team under second-year head coach Carla Decker will kick off athletic competition this fall. The Lady Bobcats will look to be a force with the WVIAC after a second-place finish in the standings last year. They open their season August 26 in a two-day tournament at Shippensburg (PA) University.

Wesleyan’s football team and men’s soccer team will be the next two squads to get their season underway. Football coach Bill Struble and his Bobcats will seek to regain the WVIAC title against a formidable 10-game schedule. Struble, who begins his 23rd season as mentor of the Bobcats, welcomes back plenty of talent from last year’s 6-5 team. The ‘Cats get their season started on August 27 when they travel to Wingate (NC) University.

The men’s soccer team will also open their season on August 27, hosting Shawnee State (OH). Under long-time coach Gavin Donaldson, the Bobcats will look to improve on their third-place finish in the conference from last year.

The women’s soccer team and new head coach Glenn Francis will host Indiana University of Pennsylvania on August 29 in their season opener. Francis will look to build off of Wesleyan’s fourth-place finish in the WVIAC last season.

The women’s tennis team, the men’s and women’s cross country teams, and the golf team will all begin their seasons on September 10. Coach Diane Godwin and the women’s tennis team will start their season at Concord while Jesse Skiles and his band of runners will begin their season at Davis & Elkins. The women’s cross country team will be gunning for their fourth consecutive conference title this year. The golf team under coach John Barbour will open their campaign at Ohio Valley.
