How to Make a Gift to WV Wesleyan College

More than ever, supporting young people in their efforts to further their education is critically important to our nation and our world. An education at West Virginia Wesleyan can open the door to the transforming experience that is at the heart of our mission.

Gifts may be made in a number of ways, and careful planning will assure that both you and WV Wesleyan receive maximum benefits. The following information may be helpful as you consider your giving at this time.

Giving Online

Giving online is easy and secure. You can use your Visa, MasterCard or American Express credit card. Gifts can be designated to the Wesleyan Fund, a specific scholarship or academic department. In addition, your gift can be made in honor or in memory of a loved one.

Matching Gifts

If you or your spouse are employed by one of the many companies listed online, you may be able to double or even triple the value of your gift to West Virginia Wesleyan College! Last year, WV Wesleyan received matching gifts from more than 80 companies because alumni, parents and friends took the one extra step to request that their employer match their gift to the College.

Please take a moment to check and see if your employer will match your gift. Their personnel office can provide you the information and forms needed to initiate a matching gift.

Thank you for making the extra effort - and for your doubled support to WV Wesleyan College! For more information on matching gifts, please contact: Christie Villers, Coordinator of Gift Records and Staff Technology.

Gifts of Cash

Gifts of cash are generally the easiest to make to Wesleyan. They are also the most effective because they can immediately be used for a range of current needs or donor designated purposes at the College.

Gifts may be made by cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express or monthly electronic fund transfer. Gifts are deductible to the extent provided by federal and state tax laws.

  • Cash: Check should be made payable to "WV Wesleyan College" and if designated to a particular program, write the designation on the memo line of your check. Please mail to: WV Wesleyan College, Office of Advancement, 59 College Ave., Buckhannon, WV 26201.
  • Credit Card Payment: Gifts may be made on both MasterCard and Visa credit cards. Please call the Advancement Office during business hours, M-F from 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Credit card information can be accepted over the telephone. The phone number is (800) 768-8264 or (304) 473-8542. Please ask for the Gift Records Office.

Gifts of Appreciated Property

Stocks, bonds, or mutual funds make excellent gifts to the College. Gifts of appreciated securities have the advantage of capturing the appreciation with no capital gains tax being paid by the donor. You are entitled to a federal income tax charitable deduction for the fair market value of the securities on the date of the gift. You may carry forward any unused deduction for five additional tax years if necessary.

If you would like to make a gift of appreciated securities held in an agency account, you may instruct your broker to electronically transfer the shares to West Virginia Wesleyan College. Call the Office of Advancement during business hours at (800) 768-8264 or (304) 473-8542 or e-mail makeagift@wvwc.edu.

In order to donate securities held in your possession, you may sign a stock power and have the signature guaranteed. Any official bank can provide this service for you. Then mail the unsigned certificate and the signed stock power to the College in separate envelopes.

Gifts of Life Insurance

Gifts of life insurance may be made in one of the following ways:

  1. Designating West Virginia Wesleyan College as the owner and beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy.
  2. Buying a new policy and designating West Virginia Wesleyan College as the owner and beneficiary.
  3. Adding the College as a charitable beneficiary to an existing policy.

Gifts of Personal Property or Collectibles

A gift-in-kind allows you to give personal property to West Virginia Wesleyan College in the form of real estate, books for the library, antiques, collectibles, or works of art. If the College can use the gift in its educational program, you may deduct the full fair market value. The fair market value is determined by a professional appraisal obtained by the donor.

Gifts of a Legacy

By remembering West Virginia Wesleyan College in your will, you ensure our future work. There are several ways to make a bequest to the College in your will.

Gifts in Honor of a Loved One

You may pay special tribute to a loved one by making a charitable gift to the College. Any of the options mentioned above may be used to make gifts that honor or memorialize.

Life Income Gifts

You also may make gifts in the form of charitable remainder trusts or charitable gift annuities. These gifts retain an income for you or others and provide substantial tax advantages. They also are significant financial, tax and estate planning tools.
