Winter Sports in Full Swing

The men’s and women’s basketball teams are heading into the final stretch of their regular season schedules, looking to hit their stride with the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) tournament looming in just four weeks.

The women’s team was on a roll, winning five of their first six games in January and moving up to sixth in the East Regional rankings of Division II programs. Then came a bump in the road as they dropped three of their next four contests. The Lady Bobcats of coach Steve Tierney ’93 MBA are 12-8 overall and 7-4 in the WVIAC. Senior center Frances Carvajal and sophomore guard Sarah Grab continue to lead the Lady Bobcats’ offensive attack. Carvajal is averaging 19.3 points per game while Grab is averaging 18.0 points per game. Grab was the WVIAC’s “Player of the Week” for the week of January 10. The women’s team looks to build off of their impressive 68-63 road against Wheeling Jesuit when they meet Alderson-Broaddus on Feb. 10 in Philippi.

The men’s team under coach Charlie Miller ’66 continues to makes strides on the court. After a rough start to the season, the Bobcats continue to improve, picking up three wins in the month of January. Senior forward Lynell Ingram continues to have an outstanding season, averaging a team-high 20.2 game and 9.5 rebounds per game. Ingram earned WVIAC “Player of the Week” honors for the week of January 24. The Chicago native posted a pair of double-doubles while averaging 32.7 points and 11.3 rebounds on the week. Ingram established a new career-high with 40 points in a wild 109-105 win over Davis & Elkins. He also poured in 30 points on league-leading West Virginia State and added 28 points and 15 rebounds in a rout of Bluefield State. Senior forward Jelani Watson’s play remains near the top of the conference, with the junior scoring 16.1 points and grabbing 9.4 rebounds per game. The men wrap up a four game road trip at Alderson-Broaddus on Feb. 10.

The Bobcat men’s and women’s swim teams of coach Paul Mangen are putting together final preparations for their participation in the WVIAC/BGMC Championships which begin at Wooster College in Wooster, Ohio on Feb. 16. What I enjoy about swimming? Swimming helps develop self-discipline and keeps me in good shape. It is also good to be part of a team and to have a goal to work toward.

Why I chose Wesleyan? I chose Wesleyan because of the outdoor recreation opportunities and the financial assistance I could receive here.

What I like best about Wesleyan? My favorite thing about Wesleyan is its location. The college is 1.5 hours from the best whitewater river east of the Mississippi! Wesleyan also has a low student/teacher ratio, which makes the learning experience very personal and high in quality.

Plans after College? After Wesleyan, I hope to study geology at a graduate school in California or Colorado.

Jason Foote

Sport: Swimming
Class: Junior
Events: 1000-Yard Freestyle; Butterfly; Individual Medley
Hometown: Santa Rosa, California
High School: Mannford
Major: Computer Info Science
What I enjoy about swimming? I enjoy swimming because everyone swims as an individual. If you have a good race, it is your accomplishment, and that is personally satisfying. At the same time, swimming also is a team sport. Each of us pulls for the success of all team members. I feel very lucky to have my teammates. It would be impossible to get through all those 6 a.m. practices without the support of the team.

Why I chose Wesleyan? I learned about Wesleyan through the swim team's recruiting program, and I visited the college on a recruiting trip. I liked the small campus and the opportunity for small class sizes. It only took me a few days to make my decision to sign and to attend Wesleyan.

What is your favorite Wesleyan memory? Wow! There are too many to list. I would definitely include being trapped in Parkersburg on our way back from the Conference championships my freshmen year. Some of our great swim team parties would rank pretty high, too. Also, I have made some great friends here. I think we will continue to be friends long after we all have graduated.

Plans after college? After college, my immediate plans are to expand my web design firm (www.webdesignbyjason.com) and to look for a job in either software design or another computer field. I may stay in West Virginia, but I’m a California native. I may think about moving somewhere a bit.......warmer.
