Update on Sports

Three more West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships have been added to the Wesleyan trophy room as the softball team and the men’s and women’s track and field team’s all brought home conference titles.

SOFTBALL
Wesleyan won the WVIAC title with a thrilling come-from-behind 2-1 victory over West Liberty State College. The victory was the 13th conference championship overall and 12th title in the last 15 years for the Lady Bobcats.


The Lady Bobcats earned their way to the championship round after defeating Salem International, the University of Charleston, and Alderson-Broaddus College.
Wesleyan had four players named to the All-Tournament team -- Miranda Durst, Blandford, Kareen Bilotta, and Cory Karcesky.

The victory gave the Lady Bobcats an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II tournament in the Great Lakes Regional at Edwardsville, Illinois, where they compiled a 1-2 record. They defeated Gannon in their first game by a 3-1 score, but dropped contests to Southern Indiana (1-0) and SIU Edwardsville (11-2).

Coach Steve Warner was awarded WVIAC Coach of the Year for the tenth time during his Wesleyan career. Warner, who surpassed the 500 win mark this season, led the Lady ‘Cats to their sixth consecutive regular season league title. Seniors Sarah Baise, Heather Hall, and Karcesky were all named to the All-WVIAC First team. Jana White was named to the Second team while Meghan Keith was tabbed for the Honorable Mention list. TRACK AND FIELD
The track and field teams continue to dominate the conference as both teams won WVIAC title again this year. The women have won WVIAC titles 12 of the last 14 years while the men have won five over the last 12 years. The women have won four titles in a row while the men have won three. BASEBALL
Ended the year with an 18-25-1 record overall and a 9-11-1 ledger in the WVIAC. Junior Eric Stettnisch and junior Justin Rozich were named to the All-WVIAC Second team Stettnisch led the team in hitting with a .421 average while junior Josh Norman headed the pitching staff with a 4-2 record and an earned-run-average of 4.26. MEN’S TENNIS
The team compiled an 8-5 record overall and a 6-2 mark in the WVIAC. They advanced to the semi-finals of the WVIAC tournament before dropping a hard-fought match against Shepherd University. For more information about the tennis team, please visit http://www.wvwc.edu/ath/spring0405/mtentop.asp.

GOLF
The golf teamfinished eighth in the regional tournament. They placed seventh in the WVIAC tournament. Sophomore Graham Reger was named to the All-WVIAC Honorable Mention team after averaging a 75.00 in the conference’s sanctioned tournaments…squad finished seventh in the WVIAC tournament. Athletic Department Seeking Hall of Fame Nominations

The West Virginia Wesleyan College Athletic Department established its Hall of Fame in 1996. Each year, four individuals and/or a team will be selected from the nominees that have been submitted to the department by Wesleyan alumni and friends.

We are asking for your nominations for the Hall of Fame. Your nominations may be mailed to Dr. George Klebez ‘65, 59 College Avenue, Buckhannon, WV 26201. Please list the name of your nominee, what year he/she graduated, what sport(s) he/she played, and any other important details about their athletic career.

Eligible nominees are former Wesleyan athletes who have not been on an active roster at any time during the past 10 years (anyone graduating prior to 1996 is eligible) and any long-time supporters and contributors to Wesleyan athletics.

The Hall of Fame recipients are honored each year at Homecoming. A bronze plaque with the recipient’s nameplate is hung in the lobby of the John D. Rockefeller Physical Education Building.
