May greetings to each of you. This issue of the Orangeline highlights the recent events of Wesleyan’s 116th Commencement weekend. This time of year is always exciting on Wesleyan’s campus as the semester comes to a close, students head off for summer jobs, and an excited group of graduates prepare to enter a new stage in their life.
As the alumni representative, I have been honored to extend greetings to our newest members of the alumni association during the past three Commencement ceremonies. While it is always a thrill for me to share a few words with them, I realize that the messages of the weekend are often forgotten or sometimes not even heard during the excitement of the day. In fact, can you recall your commencement speaker and the message that was shared? |
|
Most of us can not, as I too fall into that category. However, I must say that I have been energized by the messages of recent speakers at both Baccalaureate and Commencement as they have challenged our graduates to take a stand, extend a helping hand, and have faith in God as they step into the world that awaits them. As I have increased my involvement with Wesleyan over the past decade, I am very impressed and proud of the level of energy and action that our students have for social justice issues. It is very clear to me that Wesleyan’s mission of challenging students to develop their intellectual, ethical, spiritual and leadership potential is demonstrated on our campus, in our community, and throughout the world. Wesleyan’s website is filled with the impressive work of our students and faculty. I would encourage you to spend a few minutes exploring the good works that Wesleyan offers to others and be proud of your association with your alma mater. The web site address is www.wvwc.edu While it may have been years since you have heard a baccalaureate or commencement message, I hope you realize the value Wesleyan has played in defining who you are and your current contributions to the community and world in which you live. For that we owe a great deal to our Wesleyan heritage. Sincerely, Kevin W. Bruny ‘84
