11th Annual Bobcat Golf Open a Success Winning the 2006 Bobcat Open was the foursome of William Armistead '81, Izaak Mendelson, Jared Ramsey, and Ken Ramsey '84. “The Bobcat Open Golf Tournament is annually an event that provides alumni and friends a great day of fun and fellowship on a spectacular golf course,” remarked | ||
Director of Marketing and Communication Robert Skinner '75. “This year, we had golfers from as far away as California and Texas. We also tried a new format which allowed players to play their own shot after the team selected the best drive. Our participants and the generous support of our sponsors made this year’s golf outing a financial success.” Wesleyan is proud to present the names of the organizations and individuals whose contributions helped make the 11th annual Bobcat Open a success. Class Notes: June / July 2006 1940 GELIA WAMSLEY SHAW, Orange, CA, celebrated her 88th birthday on March 31, 2006 and would like to let her classmates know that she is doing quite well. 1951 ARDEN R. BECK, Belington, WV, and his wife, Maysel, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on November 21, 2005. 1956 ROBERT SAMMIS, Stratford, CT, has retired from The Waterfront and Harbor Management Commission after 39 years of service. A reception was held by The Waterfront Commission for the occasion. Bob is a retired senior vice president for Trust Investments of Union Trust Company now Wachovia Bank. He also serves as a board member and consultant to various community organizations and charities in the Fairfield County area. 1958 MICHAEL M. BROUMBERG, Ellicott City, MD, would like all his fellow classmates to know that he is looking forward to 2008 when the class of 1958 will become members of the Emeritus Club. 1959 WILLIAM H. HOLMES, Phoenix, AZ, and his wife, Carolyn, and their son, Geoffrey, designed, built and operate the Great Harvest Bread Company in Tempe, AZ. Bill retired from college administration in 2000, played golf for a couple of years before he decided it was time to “unretire.” An important part of the Great Harvest mission is to “build community, one loaf at a time” by providing a caring environment along with high-quality products. 1961 ROBERT H. LANG, Surfside Beach, SC, recently retired from territory sales. He currently is working as a substitute teacher in the Myrtle Beach area. 1962 R. MALLORY STARR JR., Chevy Chase, MD, has been appointed president of the Institute of Management Consultants, Inc. for the Washington, DC region. He is also the director of the Sequoia Presidential Yacht Group, LLC, a founding director of Presidential Museums Foundation, and serves on the advisory board of the Great Falls Tavern. 1966 LAWRENCE J. LEE III, New York, NY, was inducted into the Hunter College Alumni Hall of Fame in May 2006. He has two graduate degrees from Hunter, receiving an MA in psychology in 1974 and an MSW in 1976. * STEPHEN H. GUTEKUNST, Suffolk, VA, was united in marriage to Alexandra Sandway in April 2005. They moved from Martha’s Vineyard, MA to Suffolk in December 2005. 1967 WILLIAM B. GIBB, Hermitage, PA, is completing his 37th year of teaching with the Hermitage School District. He still loves to teach. He and his wife, Carol, have three children and two grandchildren. * SAMUEL D. FEOLA, Highlands Ranch, CO, was named the program director for Raytheon Polar Services Company, a business unit of Raytheon Technical Services Company. As program director, Sam supports the United States Antarctic Program under contract to the National Science Foundation’s Office of Polar Programs. 1970 DAVID C. MYERS, Alexandria, VA, has been named pastor of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Washington, DC.
1976 GAVIN APPLEBY, Atlanta, GA, recently joined the Atlanta office of the law firm of Littler Mendelson, the nation’s largest employment law firm. Gavin, named one of Georgia’s best lawyers, continues to litigate employment cases on behalf of employers as well as provide expertise in drug testing and pre-employment testing matters. Gavin reports that Chris, his 16 year-old son, is a better musician than he ever was, even when he played with the WVWC jazz band. Chris is considering attending WVWC.
1980 CHRISTOPHER (CHRIS) MOORE, Oak Ridge, NC, and BARRY H. WOLFE, Peachtree City, GA, hosted the first annual “Chi Phi Beach/Golf Outing” in Holden Beach, NC to benefit the “Root Ranch Preservation Fund.” Participants included GREGG BROWN ’87, PETER DUGAN ’80, JAMES EDDINS ’87, JOSEPH EDDINS ’73, EDWARD GREENAN JR. ’86, DAVID HAMBURG ’83, MALCOLM HOOD JR. ’79, CHAD HORNE ’86, TODD LEONHARDT ’86, MICHAEL LUTZ ’85, CHRISTOPHER (CHRIS) LYNCH ’88, RONALD WEBER ’79, JOHN WELLS III ’80, TIMOTHY (TIM) SHIPLEY ‘80, and ROBERT (BOB) THAYER ‘85. Barry and Chris thank everyone for their generosity/support and hope for an even bigger turnout next year.
1986 KAREN REED HALLOWELL, Lebanon, PA, is teaching elementary computer at Ebenezer Elementary School to 670 students and “loves every minute of it.” * MARGARET LOCKET SPANN, Port Charlotte, FL, and her husband, J. C., celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 10, 2005 with friends from all over the United States including the preacher that married them. Margaret’s uncle who gave her away along with her bride’s maid and her husband’s best man were also in attendance for the celebration. * CHRIS A. WOOD, Hurricane, WV, has accepted the position of vice president for Institutional Advancement at Mount Olive College in Mount Olive, NC effective August 2006. 1987 MICHAEL C. SHAW, Fairmont, WV, has retired as fundraiser at the WVU School of Medicine in Morgantown, WV after 12 years of service in July 2005. He opened a fine wine shop in Fairmont named The Montis Wine Room. Michael’s wife, Kim, is director of nursing at the Arbors of Fairmont, and they are the parents of two daughters, Shannon and Emily.
1989 ROBERT W. EVANGELISTI, Woodbury Heights, NJ, is currently employed as a regional sales manager with Hoya Vision Care. 1991 LISA OERTEL REICH, Brooklyn, NY, and TAMMY PAXTON MILLER, Huntersville, NC, who are old friends and amateur musicians have joined forces once again and are currently on an East Coast tour in a Grateful Dead cover band called “Uncle John Wesley’s Band.” Tammy’s husband, MATTHEW MILLER ’92, is the band manager and occasionally performs as backup vocalist. * SHELLEY GOUGH LAUFFER, Mt. Airy, MD, and her husband, KEVIN LAUFFER ’92, announce the birth of their daughter, Marisa Kathleen, on December 3, 2004. She joins her brother, Brandon, at home. 1992 JILL SCHUSTER PERRY, Beaver, PA, has been promoted to program director of the Tom Rutter and Moffett Halfway Houses for men which is part of Gateway Rehab halfway house services. She was actively involved in the expansion of both halfway houses and the relocation of the Moffett House to its current home in Beaver Falls. * KELLEY DUFFY CONLEY, West Mifflin, PA, and her husband, Thomas (Tom), announce the birth of their son, Ryan Duffy, on June 8, 2006. He joins brother, Patrick, and sister, Shannon at home. 1995 SARAH VINCENT CRICKENBERGER, Oak Hill, VA, and her husband, Brian, announce the birth of their son, Benjamin Eric, on February 27, 2006.
1997 LAURA SHOOK-MARINO, Raleigh, NC, and her husband, Richard (Rick) Marino, announce the birth of their son, Alexander Lee, on March 12, 2006. He joins big brother, Noah, at home. Alexander was born, not only on the same day as his cousin, Kate Presley Simpson, but in the same hospital and with the same doctor. Kate is the daughter of MARY SHOOK SIMPSON ’96 and her husband, Christopher Simpson. * GEORGE COYNE, Alexandria, VA, and his wife, Allison, announce the birth of their son, Jackson Innes, on May 13, 2006. George continues to build his psychotherapy private practice by counseling adolescents, adults, and couples. 1998 STACEY FRYE KERR, Greensburg, PA, and her husband, Glenn, announce the birth of their son, Levi, on February 13, 2006.
2000 JENNIFER SIMMONS-MOSS, Montgomery Village, MD, has established senior level recognition as a service manager at Ultimate Staffing, and she plays a lead role in the team that is currently one of the top performers in the country while working with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to major communications corporations to aid with staffing/hiring solutions. Her husband, STEVEN (STEVE) MOSS ‘04, was promoted to vice president of sales for United Business Machines in December 2005. * STACY NOLAN, Owings Mills, MD, earned her master of science degree in environmental studies from Towson University in May 2006. She is currently the head of the science department at Liberty High School in Eldersburg, MD where she teaches all levels of chemistry.
2004 ELIZABETH A. MAXIN, Zelienople, PA, received her master of social work degree from the University of Pittsburgh in April 2006. She is currently employed at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center as a medical social worker, specializing in organ transplant. 2006 KATHRYN MILLARD, Hammondsport, NY, was united in marriage to ANDREW SMITH ’05 on May 12, 2006 at Camp Casowasco where they first met in Moravia, NY. ANGELA GAY KINKEAD ‘79, Dean of Chapel at Wesleyan, officiated the ceremony. Others in attendance where SCOTT GREEN ’05 and RAYMOND (RAY) LAMORA ’04 MBA ’05.
