                Student Feature - Justin Rozich

rozichThe awards just keeping coming in for recent 2006 graduate Justin Rozich – both in the classroom and on the playing field. Rozich, who graduated this May with a degree in wildlife management, was recently honored as the College’s Outstanding Senior in Environmental Science and on the baseball field. He was selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association's NCAA Division II All-North Atlantic Region Second Team and was named to the All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Second Team.

On the baseball diamond, the Elkins, WV native was a key contributor for head coach Randy Tenney. As starter at second base since his sophomore year, Rozich left his name in the Wesleyan record books in seven different categories. He is second all-time in triples (13), tied for sixth in runs scored (114), seventh in hits (171) and RBI (118), eighth in doubles (29) and home runs (17), and ninth in at-bats (441).

His sophomore year was his best season, crushing the ball with a .481 batting average that ranked him in the top five in the nation. He was also ranked nationally in two other categories that season. “I was fortunate enough to play for a great coach in Randy Tenney and have some talented teammates around me,” said Rozich. “Just being a part of this team was something special for me.”

“Justin was everything you would want from a player,” commented Tenney. “He played the game hard and was committed to be the best player on the field. He is leaving as one of the better hitters that this College has ever seen.”

Following his graduation during Commencement Weekend, Rozich hung up the baseball cleats and left his Home among the Hills for the mountains of Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest in Nevada and a small portion of California. He is employed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Wildlife Division working as a wildlife biologist for the Forest Service on the Ely Ranger District in Nevada.

“I have been doing quite a bit of field work since I arrived,” remarked Rozich. “I have been working with Bonneville cutthroat trout, doing some range monitoring, and just completed a rookie wildland firefighting school. Things have been going great out here so far.”

Rozich began working with the USDA staff as a paid intern following his sophomore year and has spent his last two summers there before being hired full-time this summer. He would leave for Nevada immediately following the baseball season and return home to West Virginia and to Wesleyan right before classes started. “It kept me busy,” he stated. “My trip here that first summer was the first time I was really far away from home in Elkins. But through my travels and internship, I learned to be completely independent while working in a ‘real’ job. While I was here, I was able to take the environmental science knowledge and skills learned in a Wesleyan classroom and labs and test them against the demands of a real-world setting.”

Four years ago, Rozich made a decision to attend Wesleyan, and it was a decision that he has never regretted. “I have so many people to thank for my success in the classroom like Dr. Jeanne Sullivan, Dr. Carl Colson, and especially my advisor Dr. Jeff Simmons,” he concluded. “Having quality professors in the classroom like them certainly made my decision to come to Wesleyan the correct one. I had a couple of different colleges I could have attended, but I knew Wesleyan was solid academically, and that is what sold me on attending here. I had a wonderful time. I am going to leave Wesleyan with so much knowledge, and so many wonderful friends and teammates, people that have encouraged me and inspired me to be the best.”

Annie Merner Pfeiffer Library Update
Submitted by Paula McGrew '78 - Assistant Professor of Library Science and Reference Librarian

library

Many people believe that the internet has made libraries less relevant.  On the contrary, the internet is a valuable tool that makes libraries more relevant than ever!  Our library uses the online platform to gather information, to make information easier for you to access, and to get the word out about resources and services.

As an example, we use our Library Webpage as a starting place for research and a way to share information about library hours and staff information.  In addition, there is a weblog and a place for asking questions of library staff via AOL Instant Messenger!  Our catalog is web-based so that it can be searched from anywhere in the world.  You can even renew your books online!   When you look inside the section called Find Electronic Resources, you will find an A-Z list of databases to which we subscribe.  This information is very reliable and is of great use to our students.  There is also a section called eReference which contains free internet resources which we have chosen and evaluated.  To find out how you can become more adept at searching for and evaluating websites, click on the section called Internet Research Guide.

Internet search engines, such as Google, also find that there is a great need for a partnership between the internet and libraries.  Their mission is to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful”.  That philosophy sounds familiar to us here in the library!  Check out Google Scholar as an example of how this partnership is working and evolving.

We still use the traditional methods as well to be sure, but the library that doesn’t embrace the new technological tools of our times will soon be left behind.
