A Look Back at Wesleyan's 2005 Homecoming

Homecoming is West Virginia Wesleyan's richest tradition, linking together the College, the alumni, and its current students. For three days during a beautiful fall setting on Wesleyan's campus, alumni returned to their Home Among the Hills.
The Homecoming weekend (Oct. 21-23) started Friday morning with the Founders Day Convocation. Joseph S. Beeson led the induction ceremony of the six new members into Wesleyan's Board of Trustees -- Helen Davis Bell, Ellis Conley '73, John Esaias '71, Lloyd Jackson, Mara Linaberger Watson '58, and Linda Mitchell Wellings '92. John C. Wright, a 1948 graduate and former Wesleyan professor, gave the address, entitled "Liberal Arts Education in the Information Society." Following the singing of "My Home Among the Hills," President William R. Haden presented the Rhododendron Award to Harold T. Elmore. Scott Bellamy, professor of business and advisor for the SIFE program, received the award for exemplary teaching.

With the rain holding off during the afternoon, over 60 Wesleyan alumni and friends were able to take to the links for 18 holes of golf in the James K. "Johnny" Myers Golf Classic. Nightfall gave way to nine then class reunion dinners that evening. The classes of 1960, 1965, 1970, and 1975 celebrated their reunions with a reception and dinner at the Stonewall Resort at Weston, the Class of 1980 gathered at the home Michael and Susan Aloi's, and the Class of 1985 convened at C. J. Maggies. On Saturday, the classes of 1990, 1995 and 2000 celebrated their reunions at the Young Alumni Reunion BBQ in Erickson Alumni Center.

Saturday morning, alumni were treated to a rainy Homecoming Parade down Main Street featuring over 250 members of the Wesleyan community. During halftime of the Wesleyan-Shepherd University football contest, Joshua Bennett and Jacqueline Murphy were named the 2005 Homecoming King and Queen. Wesleyan inducted three individuals and two teams into its Athletic Hall of Fame. Inducted this year were Marvin Culpepper '51, J. William (Bill) Grimes '63, Larry Rhodes '69 and the 1989 and 1990 men's soccer teams. Saturday morning/afternoon also featured the Homecoming Bobcat BBQ in the auxiliary gym, and the Emeritus Club Social in the French A. See Dining Center.

The West Virginia Wesleyan Alumni Association was proud to recognize five Wesleyan graduates and friends of the College during the annual Homecoming alumni banquet on Saturday night. The Alumni Association honored P. Darrell Neufer '84 and Chaplain (Colonel) James W. Daniels Jr. '71 with the Alumni Achievement Award; Michael J. Aloi '80 and Susan Miller Aloi '80 with the Wesleyan Service Award; Danette Ifert Johnson '90 and Janine L. Roberts '99 with the Young Alumni Achievement Award, and Robert J. Wallace with the Extra Mile Award.

The weekend concluded with Frank Fowler III '70 being the featured speaker at the Homecoming Chapel Service Sunday morning in Wesley Chapel
