Class Chair Checks

During Homecoming 2006 many alumni from the classes of 1961, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, and 2001 returned to their "Home Among the Hills" to attend special reunion gatherings and reminisce with old classmates.  These special events were planned immediately after Homecoming 2005.

Beginning in November 2005, each class chair began contacting classmates to promote attendance at the reunion event as well as class giving. Letters, phone calls, and e-mails were methods in which alumni asked for donations for special projects and encouraged attendance.  Special projects this year included:

  • The class of ’66 seeking gifts to complete the Harmer Entryway to Senior Walk.  They raised $5,863 toward this project.
  • The class of ’81 seeking gifts to help with residence hall renovations.  They raised $3,140 designated for window replacement.

Recognition of class giving was announced at the reunion celebrations but formal recognition of the class gift to the College occurred at the Alumni Banquet. This year the class of '66 was recognized with the highest total class gift and for the highest percentage of class members giving to the college during their reunion year.  Chairs Ron and Kelly Lockhart accepted the James H. Bowen ’52 participation award for the class.  First presented during Homecoming 2005, this award was named in honor of Mr. Bowen because of his consecutive financial contributions to the college prior to his graduation and virtually every year after until his death in 2003. His wife, Clara, continues to give today because of their belief in the Wesleyan education and experience. This year the percentage of class giving ranged from 10% to a high of 43%. The class of 1966 achieved a 43% participation rate.

Totals for class giving and participation were:
