Board of Trustees Votes
to Reinstate Nursing Program

West Virginia Wesleyan’s Board of Trustees has voted unanimously to reinstate the College’s nursing program. The West Virginia State Board of Examiners for Registered Nurses reviewed Wesleyan’s request at their meeting in Charleston on October 26, which was attended by Wesleyan nursing chairperson, Dr. Judith McKinney.

“There is tremendous interest in nursing education, both in traditional-aged and non-traditional students,” says President Balch.  “We also know there is a critical shortage of nurses across the country and in West Virginia.  We anticipate this decision will be very well received by alumni and friends of Wesleyan.  I am very appreciative of the decision by our Board of Trustees.”

Wesleyan’s program, when approved by the state board, will provide students the opportunity to earn Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees.  The College’s program is currently accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Wesleyan has enjoyed a 100 percent employment placement rate for its nursing graduates and its first-time licensure passage rate last year was 91.6%, well above the national 80 percent average. College officials expect nursing to help attract additional transfer students as the private co-educational residential institution recently signed articulation agreements with Montgomery College, MD and with West Virginia’s ten community and technical colleges.

Dr. Jeremy Sibold Honored with Exemplary Teaching Award

siboldDr. Jeremy Sibold, chairperson of Wesleyan’s exercise science department, received the College’s Award for Exemplary Teaching during the Founder’s Day Convocation on October 20.

Presenter of the award, Dr. Larry Parsons, interim dean of the College commented, “Each year West Virginia Wesleyan College and the General Board of Higher Education of The United Methodist Church recognize the accomplishments of an extraordinary teacher, one whose professional competence, dedication to the growth of students, and commitment to the highest academic standards combine to create a campus environment in which learning flourishes.  Jeremy knows the subject matter of his discipline inside and out and he can communicate that in such a way that his students understand it and can apply it.  He cares deeply about the success of his students.”

Dr. Sibold, a 1996 graduate of Wesleyan, earned a master’s in education and athletic training certification from the University of Virginia, and his doctorate in education from West Virginia UniversityHe joined Wesleyan’s faculty in 1999, and has been the driving force behind the development of a new exercise science major at the College.

“Dr. Sibold has been my professor and advisor for three and a half years,” said Ashley Arnott, a senior athletic training major from Dunbar, WV.  “He constantly challenges us to think outside the box, yet he has the unique ability to make difficult information easy to understand.  His lectures are intriguing and peak students’ interest.  Dr. Sibold constantly strives to make sure students relate to the concepts he covers in class and he constantly pushes us to consider new ideas about opportunities to promote our professional development.”

“Dr. Sibold has an amazing ability to make students understand difficult material by using good examples,” says Ashley Jones, a senior athletic training major from Elkins, WV.  “He is also never too busy to take the time to assist students.”

Dr. Marvin Carr Named Workman Chair of Religion
carrDr. Marvin Carr, associate professor of Christian education, has been named as the Workman Chair of Religion at the College.  Dr. Carr was surprised with the honor at the College’s annual Founders Day Convocation on October 20.

Dr. Carr joined Wesleyan’s faculty in 1974.  Prior to coming to Buckhannon, Dr. Carr earned a B.S. from West Virginia University, B.D. from Duke University, S.T. M. from Union Theological Seminary, and a D. Min. from Methodist Theological School in Ohio.  He has served as the Director of Parish Ministry for the United Methodist Church and Chairperson of Wesleyan’s Christian Education department.  A long-time leader in 4-H, Dr. Carr is also active in the Buckhannon Rotary Club.  He is married to Sarah Ann Lynch Carr and they are the parents of four children, Sarah Carr-Parsons ’82, Rev. Margaret Nickell ’83, Marvin Carr IV ’85, and Rebecca Carr.

“Marvin Carr personifies the spirit of the gift from Arthur Workman,” said Dr. Larry Parsons, interim dean of the College.  He has prepared countless persons for the pastorate ministry and is the role model for United Methodist Churches’ call to serve those less fortunate than we are.”
“Dr. Carr is one of the most passionate and dedicated teachers I have ever had in my life,” added Wendy Pittman, a senior Christian education major from Brevard, NC.  “Since my freshman year, I have known that he genuinely cared about me and my education.”

“Pedagogy is not just teaching. It is a way of being with people, as a teacher. Theologian and educator, Thomas Groome’s “pedagogy of hope” provides a model of integrating theory and practice. It is a way of informing students’ beliefs and empowering them to transform themselves and the world,” expressed Angela Gay Kinkead, dean of the Chapel. “Since 1974, Marvin Carr has not embraced this pedagogy of hope; he has embodied it on the campus, in the community, and throughout the church. Marvin Carr’s work as an educator honors both the spirit and the letter of the Workman gift.”

The Workman Chair of Religion was established by Dr. Milford Arthur Workman, a retired United Methodist minister and 1918 graduate of the College.  A native of Oceana, WV, Dr. Workman served churches in West Virginia, New York, and New Jersey.  He was widely known for his philanthropic gifts to Wesleyan, United Methodist charities, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon, the United Way, Lion’s Club projects, and the churches he served.  He accumulated his wealth by buying stock in 1922 and he continued to save and re-invest throughout his life.  Dr. Workman established a chair in Wesleyan’s religion department in 1981.   Dr. Carr is the fourth faculty member to be named as a Workman Chair.  The previous holder, Dr. Arthur Holmes, professor of religion retired last May.
