Lady Bobcats win WVIAC Championship for Fourth Consecutive Year

West Virginia Wesleyan’s fall athletic teams are coming to the half way point of their seasons as we reach the first week of October, and several Bobcats are shining on their respective fields.

To call the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat cross country team a dynasty would be a disservice to them. The women's team surpassed that title years ago, but unfortunately, there isn't a better word to describe their complete dominance over the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) during the last 11 years.

The Lady Bobcats went into the WVIAC Championships this year as an underdog to Alderson-Broaddus, but they were not to be denied their fourth consecutive championship as they edged A-B by just two points, 37 to 39. The Lady 'Cats have won 10 of the last 11 West Virginia Conference titles. "I am very proud of our girls," remarked coach Jesse Skiles. "A-B has a great team and raced well today, but our girls ran a very smart and determined race." Skiles was also named women's Coach of the Year. He has now won the individual honor 26 times for either cross country or track. The women's title gave him his 35th conference championship.

Stephanie Hatfield was the top runner for the Lady 'Cats, finishing second with a time of 19:41.15. Missy Spangler was third with a time of 19:42.73 while Leah Erenrich was fifth with a clocking of 19:47.25. Allison Teter was 13th (20.35.80) and Amanda Griffith placed 14th (20:40.62) to round out the top five for Wesleyan. The Lady Bobcats will now participate in the NCAA East Region meet at Lock Haven, Pennsylvania on Nov. 6. The Lady Bobcats also picked up their fair share of WVIAC honors, as Hatfield was the runner of the week for Oct. 13 and Erenrich was the runner of the week for Oct. 20. Teter's impressive season earned her Freshman of the Year accolades. Her highest finish came on Sept. 10 when she placed 11th at the Mountain State Forest Festival in Elkins.

Sports Round-Up Men's Cross Country

The men's team finished with runner-up honors in the WVIAC meet. Eric Cooper was the top Bobcat runner, placing third with a time of 27:05.40 while Jason Gurney was fourth with a time of 27:06.80. They were followed by Jarren Morlan in ninth (27:32.35) and Justin Rogers in 13th (28:07.17). The Bobcats will now participate in the NCAA East Region meet at Lock Haven, Pennsylvania on Nov. 6. Gurney was named the conference's runner of the week for Oct. 13.

Volleyball

Carla Decker's volleyball team ended their regular-season on a good note, winning their last five consecutive outings. The wrapped up the regular season with a third-place finish in the WVIAC with a 15-3 conference record and a 17-15 mark overall. The Lady Bobcats will begin play in the WVIAC tournament on Nov. 11. Senior Jackie Murphy enjoyed a great October. She was named the WVIAC Player of the Week for Oct. 17, pacing the Lady Bobcats to wins over Alderson-Broaddus and Bluefield State by averaging 13.7 assists per game. She also chipped in with 15 digs and 6 aces in the two victories. She ended that week by being named Homecoming Queen during the coronation of the Wesleyan-Shepherd football game.

The Bobcats will wrap up their regular season with a road contest against Glenville State on Nov. 5. Head coach Bill Struble moved into fourth place on the All-Time WVIAC Coaching Leaders list this season, surpassing Shepherd's Walter Barr. Struble currently has 107 wins on his resume.
