Memory Question

Last month the question was “What was your favorite restaurant in Buckhannon when you attended Wesleyan?” Here are a few of the answers. Thanks for sharing.

Cheshire Cat / Heaven Only Knows in the church basement.
Ed Twill ‘87

The Ches- The Cheshire Cat
Kim Mullen Blake ‘92

Hi Wesleyan Friends!
No doubt, it was Rol-Star! (so sad it has closed) However, when we were there, it wasn't really a restaurant, just a stand in the back of the general store. They had the best turkey subs and strombolis!
Karen Croyle ‘84

Jesse's Pizza. No. 2 is not even close.
Fred Moomau '77

1953-57: the Rainbow, of course!!
Shirley Kincaid Walker ‘57

My favorite restaurant while attending Wesleyan in the early '80s was the
Cheshire Cat. Originally in the basement of a church, it was different
than anyplace else. And the sandwiches were awesome. But if your question
had been "who had the best sandwiches?", it would have to be Rol-Star's
turkey subs. I still crave those!
Sharon Metzgar Eddy ‘85

Philomena's.
Paula Holyfield Collins ‘75

Maggies but I also remember the Rainbow Restaurant with its rainbow of florescent bulbs, and a semi crummy pizza parlor across the street from McCuskey. For variety, quantity, and company - the McCuskey Dining Hall.
J. F. Lacaria ‘71

I was at WVWC from 1979-1984. The Cheshire cat was in the basement of a church near the college. The food and the atmosphere were awesome. It later moved to Main St. Years after I graduated I went there and the waitress knew exactly what I wanted to order. She had remembered me from years past. Great place, great food and wonderful service.
Lee Ann Patton '84

Why, Maggies, of course! The famous Maggies sandwich, the trains going by during dinner, what could be better! I do remember, though, that a bar just off Main St toward the other end of town, made a great Italian grilled sandwich just like a Maggie, except that it featured mozzarella cheese instead of cheddar. The Italian sandwich and a “red eye” or two made a great treat for a group of friends hanging around on a Saturday night!
Cathy Luck ‘73

Without question, when I attended Wesleyan between 1958 and 1962, the best "restaurant" in Buckhannon was without question the WVWC Dining Hall!
My parents visited Buckhannon for the first time during my Freshman year. My father, who was a Club Manager and Caterer by profession, swore that if he ever visited the place again, he would "bring his own commissary.”
Kent Loudon ‘62

The Commodore on Main Street.
Leonard Stagon ‘58

Hands down -- Rol-Star. I just can't believe it closed!! Steve and Dawn Fine
There was only one restaurant down town when I went to Wesleyan (Class of 1965). I cannot even remember the name of it but it was the only one and my favorite!
Paula Hockelberg Leaver ‘65

Jessie’s Pizza – not sure I am spelling it correctly. It was carry out mainly. I used to entertain my friends who watched me eat a large one by myself…it was located on Mains Street before you get the former school on the right.
Carole Wright Kinard ‘75

Jesse’s Pizza on Main Street across from City Hall – and since returning to Wesleyan in 2001, I still find myself wishing I could go there. Whole wheat crusts and a great jukebox!
Angela Gay Kinkead ' 79

Augies....

In 1954 thru 1958 there was really only one, we called Mollie’s place, a diner at the end of town, owned by her and her State Trooper husband. Great t-bone steaks for two bucks, and always great conversation
David Stahl ‘58

Philomena’s (for pizza and salad—her homemade Italian dressing was incredible!!)
Maggie’s (for pie)
Kathie Beeghly Weir ‘72

Maggies Rest without a doubt, ya had to love mashed potatoes, they came with everything. Her homemade pies were a staple. When the train went by everything in the place shook....gotta love it!!
John "Sonny" Sundquist '67

Restaurant choices were limited 1964-1968, and the numbers were reduced if one left out the drive-ins. (Dillon's Parkette, and another I can't remember.) Maggies (the original, not CJ Maggies) was a popular place to get a substantial meal at a reasonable price.
Karen A. Marshall ‘68

Maggie's in the 1960's.
