Rozich, Stettnisch named second team All-WVIAC
May 5, 2006

Eric StettnischPRINCETON, W.Va.—Senior Justin Rozich (Elkins) and junior Eric Stettnisch (Woodbury, N.J.) have been named to the All-WVIAC second team by the league’s head coaches. Rozich makes his third straight appearance as the second team’s second baseman. Stettnisch is the squad’s designated hitter.

The pair provided most of the offensive fire power for the ‘Cats in 2006. Batting second and third, respectively, for most of the season, Rozich and Stettnisch ended the season ranked first or second in almost every offensive category.

Eric led the Bobcats by batting .421 (59-for-140). His 59 hits, 15 doubles, seven home runs, .693 slugging percentage, and .430 on-base percentage were all tops for Wesleyan. Stettnisch’s walk-off, three-run blast in the bottom of the seventh inning against Pitt Johnstown on March 29 helped give head coach Randy Tenney his 500th career win. He also finished second behind Rozich with 34 RBI and 140 at-bats.

Justin RozichJustin’s .378 average (54-for-143) placed him fourth on the team. The Elkins, native led the club in at-bats and RBI (42); finished in a tie for the team lead with 40 runs scored; and was second behind Stettnisch in hits (54), home runs (6), slugging percentage (.622), and on-base percentage (.430).

Rozich’s terrific senior season vaulted the second baseman into the Bobcats’ record books in seven different categories. His triple against West Virginia State this past Sunday was his 13th career three-base hit and moved him into sole possession of second place all-time. He trails Troy Roberts who hit 16 triples from 1990-93. Justin finished his career on Sunday tied for sixth in runs scored (114), seventh in hits (171) and RBI (118), eighth in doubles (29) and home runs (17), and ninth in at-bats (441).

Stettnisch’s seven blasts this season give him 13 in three seasons and move him into a tenth place tie with Ben Cornish (1997-98).

In addition to excelling at the plate, Eric was 2-1 with a 5.00 ERA in nine innings pitched. He made three appearances, starting one game. In his lone start he allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits, over four innings against Bluefield State on April 9. His other victory, which was actually his first win of the year, came on April 5 when he pitched four innings of relief against IUP. In that contest he allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits.

Rozich and Stettnisch also combined for 37 multi-hit games. Justin had 15 two-hit games and three three-hit games. Eric had 10 two-hit games, seven three-hit games, and back-to-back four-hit games against Concord on March 25 and 26. His 9-for-14 series against the Mountain Lions earned him co-player of the week honors with Shepherd’s Colin Brown for the week ending March 26.

West Virginia State first baseman Jeff Miller was named as the West Virginia Conference's Player and Hitter of the Year by a vote of the league's head coaches. Teammate Zach Baldwin was selected as the WVIAC Pitcher of the Year. Veteran WVSU head coach Calvin Bailey and Ohio Valley's Chad Porter share Coach of the Year accolades.

Miller led the league during the regular season by batting .497. He ranks among the conference's top five in hits (83, 2nd), runs (62, 5th), runs batted in (62, 3rd), home runs (16, 2nd), slugging percentage (.898, 1st), and on-base percentage (.544, 3rd). The Pine Grove, Pa. junior helped propel the Jackets to a 42-5-1 regular season mark and a #3 national ranking entering the post-season.

Baldwin compiled an unbeaten 7-0 record during the regular season. The Barboursville, W.Va. senior, who shared the WVIAC Pitcher of the Year honor last season, notched a 3.29 earned run average. He struck out 49 hitters and only walked nine in 54 2/3 innings pitched. The Coastal Carolina transfer owns an 18-0 record during his two seasons at West Virginia State.

Bailey earned the league's top coaching honor for the seventh time. He went over the 800-win mark earlier this season and is 811-375-4 during his 28 seasons at WVSU. The former All-WVIAC players has guided the Yellow Jackets to their most successful regular season with a 42-5-1 record. WVSU is ranked third nationally and claimed the WVIAC Southern Division regular season title with a 14-1-1 record.

Porter has guided Ohio Valley to a success filled season of firsts for the Fighting Scot program. OVU ended the regular season with a school-record 32 wins and is making their first trip to the WVIAC Tournament. The Fighting Scots also earned the program's initial regional and national rankings in 2006 under the Byesville, Ohio native and 2002 OVU graduate.

West Virginia State dominated the league's first team all-conference squad with five selections. Northern Division champion Shepherd provided four honorees.

Baldwin, Chris Anderson (Shepherd), Andrew Knight (Fairmont State), and Scott McCormick (Shepherd) make up the starting staff on the All-WVIAC first team. Charleston's Matt Meyers is the relief pitcher.

Chad Bongiovanni of Charleston is behind the plate. First basemen Miller and Dirk Webb (Shepherd) hold down the right side of the first team infield. Ryan Taylor (W.Va. State) is at second base, while Joey Besl (Concord) is at short. The third base slot was filled by West Liberty State senior standout Justin Edwards.

Collin Brown (Shepherd), Patrick Griffith (Fairmont State), Brandon Halstead (WV State), and D.J. Schreckengost (Ohio Valley) comprise the outfield. West Virginia State's Kyle Jones, who has blasted 20 homers, is the designated hitter.

No. 3 West Virginia State upends Wesleyan
May 2, 2006 - Game 1 Box Score / Game 2 Box Score

Eric Stettnisch BUCKHANNON, W.Va—West Virginia Wesleyan (18-25-1, 9-11-1 WVIAC) and No. 3 West Virginia State (41-4-1, 14-1-1, WVIAC) battled through six and a half hours of WVIAC action on Sunday at Hank Ellis Field. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Bobcats 20-10 in game one. Darkness ended game two in the ninth with the score knotted at 8-8.

The teams posted 14 runs on 11 hits in the opener’s one hour and 10 minute first inning.

State right fielder Josh Miller went 2-for-2 with a double and a homerun to give the visitor’s an early 8-0 lead.

Senior Justin Rozich (Elkins) hit a two-run homerun and juniors Marc Kimes (Vienna) and Eddie Hargro (Morgantown) hit back-to-back doubles to help the ‘Cats climb back into the game with six runs of their own.

Each team added a run in the second, but West Virginia State scored five runs in the top of the third to go up 14-7. The Yellow Jackets would go on to score in every inning of the 20-10 victory.

Junior first baseman Jeff Miller led the Jackets going 3-for-3 with three homeruns, six RBI, and five runs scored. Miller also walked twice and was hit by a pitch.

Center fielder Mike Jackanich (Pacifica, Calif.) and left fielder Eric Stettnisch (Woodbury, N.J.) each had three hits a piece for Wesleyan. Jackanich was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple. He drove in two runs and also scored twice. Stettnisch went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Rozich finished game one 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.

State’s Daniel Palmer (4-0) threw 3 2/3 innings of relief to get the win. Palmer surrendered three earned runs on five hits. Starter Brett McClain lasted just 2/3 of inning, giving up six runs on five hits.

Wesleyan starter Art Yerecic (Export, Pa.) (3-7) labored through four innings of work for the ‘Cats. Yerecic was the biggest victim of the team’s six errors; he gave up 15 runs, eight earned, in the loss.

In game two junior Josh Norman (Wheeling) quelled the No. 1 ranked hitting team in the nation by allowing just two earned runs over six innings. The Yellow Jackets, who are hitting .393 as a team, added three unearned runs on three Bobcat errors.

West Virginia State scored unearned runs in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead.

The Bobcats overcame the small deficit, scoring three times in the bottom of the third. A Rozich triple scored Bobby Prim (Morgantown) and Jackanich. Prim had reached on a fielder’s choice and Jackanich on a single to center field. The triple was Rozich’s 13th career three-base hit and moves him into second place all-time at Wesleyan. He then scored the go-ahead run one batter later on a Stettnisch line drive to center field.

The Yellow Jackets evened the score with their third unearned run in the fifth inning.

Two runs in the fifth and another stick mark in the sixth gave the ‘Cats a 6-3 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

Drama unfolded in the last inning as the first two Jacket hitters, right fielder Josh Miller and left fielder Brandon Halstead, each homered to draw State within one run at 6-5.

Following the homeruns, Norman was lifted in favor of Tyler Phares (Elkins). The first batter Phares had to deal with was first baseman Jeff Miller. Miller singled to center field, and after a walk and sacrifice bunt, the Yellow Jackets scored the tying run when shortstop Robert Flinn’ fielder’s choice drove in Miller.

The team’s played a scoreless eighth, but the Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by second baseman Tyler Courts and a bases loaded walk by third baseman Boo Hager. Junior Jason Kelley (Buckhannon) came in and shut down the next two hitters to get the ‘Cats out of the inning down just 8-6.

Rozich started a Wesleyan rally in the top of the ninth with a lead-off single. A chopper over first base by Dan Golden (Lakeland, Fla.) and an RBI base knock by catcher Steve Holdsworth (Morgantown) cut the lead to one run. Third baseman T.J. Jarvis (Ocala, Fla.) tied the game with an RBI single through the right side. Jarvis’ single scored Greg Groves (Bridgeport) who had come in to pinch run for Golden. Eddie Hargro was then inserted to pinch run for Holdsworth. Gus Fernandez (Kissimmee, Fla.) singled to center but Hargro was cut down at the plate by center fielder Eric Workman’s game saving throw. Wesleyan’s last chance ended with a groundout to second base.

The umpires had already decided before the inning that it had become too dark and that played would be stopped after the ninth. The tie was the first of the season for both squads.

Holdsworth and Stettnisch led the ‘Cats each going 3-for-4. Rozich was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Josh Miller and Brandon Halstead went 2-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored for State. First baseman Jeff Miller was 4-for-5 with two runs scored. He finished the afternoon 7-for-8 with six RBI and seven runs scored.

Wesleyan needed to sweep the doubleheader to get into the WVIAC Tournament. The Bobcats finish the season 18-25-1, 9-11-1 in the West Virginia Conference. All-WVIAC teams will be announced soon.

After a single, an error, and a walk loaded the bases for the Indians in the bottom of seventh, Gallagher was removed in favor of reliever Jason Kelley (Buckhannon).

Kelley proceeded to strike out the next three IUP hitters en route to his second save of the season.

Justin Rozich’s (Elkins) first-inning homerun (5) gave the Bobcats an early 2-0 lead in the opener.

Four straight singles followed by a T.J. Jarvis (Ocala, Fla.) double put six more runs on the board in the second inning. Wesleyan collected five of their 10 hits in the home half of the second.

The Indians scored three unearned runs off of starter Tyler Phares (Elkins) in the third inning. Phares (3-1) pitched four innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three and walking none in his third win of the year.

Hargro and right fielder Marc Kimes (Vienna) singled to start the inning. Shortstop Bobby Prim (Morgantown) followed with a single that plated Hargro. A Jackanich triple cleared the bases and put the Bobcats up 3-0.

Rozich then singled in Jackanich and later came around to score on a Nick Newberry (Peterstown) base hit.

IUP responded by scoring nine runs over the next four innings to grab a 9-5 lead.

Wesleyan used their second six-hit, five-run inning of the game to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Wesleyan is now 9-13 overall and 3-4 in the West Virginia Conference. Ohio Valley moves to 22-12 overall, 8-4 in the WVIAC.

Batters one through five collected 11 of the team’s 15 hits and six players had at least two hits in the offensive onslaught.

Mike Jackanich (Pacifica, Calif.) led all players with three hits in the opener. Jackanich was 3-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored.

Junior Eric Stettnisch (Woodbury, N.J.) provided the big hit again when he took starter Brian Cuffe (loss) deep over the left centerfield wall for a three-run homerun in the first inning.

Stettnisch would end up two-for-four with four RBI and a run scored.

Senior third baseman T.J. Jarvis (Ocala, Fla.) was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored in the win.

Freshman Tyler Phares (Elkins) (2-1) threw his first collegiate complete game for the ‘Cats. Phares went the distance allowing seven runs, six earned, on nine hits. Trailing 5-2 in the top of the seventh inning, Ohio Valley mounted a two-out rally that culminated with Balderson’s second grand slam off of reliever Jason Kelley (Buckhannon) (1-1).

Bobby Prim (Morgantown) reached on an error to start the bottom of seventh. He was then sacrificed over to second by Jackanich, but was stranded as Brad Linch (win) battled through Justin Rozich (Elkins) and Stettnisch to preserve the split for Ohio Valley.

Rozich was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. The senior’s productive weekend moved him into eighth all time in hits (144) and ninth all time in RBI (93) for the Bobcats.

Wesleyan travels to Point Park (Pa.) on Tuesday for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.

Yerecic, Driggers drive ‘Cats to split with Ohio Valley

April 1, 2006 - Game 1 Box Score / Game 2 Box Score

Art YerecicBUCKHANNON, W.Va.—Senior pitcher Art Yerecic (Export, Pa.) threw a strong 6 1/3 innings while junior Jake Driggers (Plant City, Fla.) drove in a pair of wins to lift the ‘Cats to a 3-1 game one victory over Ohio Valley on Saturday afternoon at Hank Ellis Field. Jason Kelley (Buckhannon) (1) threw 2/3 of an inning to pick up his first save of the season.

Wesleyan scratched the game’s first run across in the bottom of the second when Driggers’ groundout scored Nick Newberry (Peterstown) from third.

Newberry had singled to lead off the inning. He was a perfect 3-for-3 in the opener with two runs scored and a stolen base.

Ohio Valley knotted things up in the fourth when first baseman Andrew Lore drove in Wayne Toms. Things could have been worse though had it not been for the arm of Eric Stettnisch (Woodbury, N.J.). Earlier in the inning the Bobcat right fielder gunned down Brad McConnachie who tried to score from second on Toms’ single.

Stettnisch would add the team’s insurance run in the fifth with a two-out RBI single to center scoring Justin Rozich (Elkins).

Rozich was 2-for-2 in the game with a run scored and a stolen base.

Ohio Valley’s Andrew Lore led the Scots going 2-for-3.

Andrew Copeland took the loss.

The Fighting Scots added two unearned runs with two outs in the fifth to take the lead.

Zach Fairbanks relieved starter Derek Sidwell and pitched a scoreless 2 2/3 innings to grab the win.

Josh Norman (Wheeling) (2-1) suffered the loss despite giving up just four hits over five innings. Norman allowed all three runs, only one of which was earned.

The teams will match up again tomorrow for games three and four. Action starts at 1:00 p.m at Hank Ellis Field.

Stettnisch’s walk-off homer gives Tenney 500th career win

March 29, 2006 - Game 1 Box Score / Game 2 Box Score

Eric StettnischBUCKHANNON, W.Va.— After giving up three runs in the top of the seventh inning and facing a two-out, bases empty bottom of the seventh, Wesleyan rallied back for a 7-6 game two win on a walk-off, three-run homerun by junior first baseman Eric Stettnisch (Woodbury, N.J.).

The win gave the ‘Cats a doubleheader split as the team dropped the first game, 3-2.

Wesleyan is now 7-11 overall, 1-2 in the WVIAC. UPJ moves to 13-8 on the season.

Bobby Prim’s (Morgantown) double down the right field line with two outs got things going for the Bobcats in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two. Following a Mike Jackanich (Pacifica, Calif.) walk, pinch-hitter Justin Rozich (Elkins) singled home Prim. Stettnisch then followed with a three-run blast that left the Mountain Cats standing on the field.

Christian Rosado (Deltona, Fla.) (1-0) took the win. Garrett Pampiks suffered the loss (1-1).

Stettnisch was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Jackanich’s first career homerun helped the center fielder to a 1-for-2 day with two RBI and two runs scored.

Prim was a solid 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

Adam Plummer and Paul Pentz each collected three hits a piece for the Mountain Cats. Plummer was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. All three of Pentz’s hits were doubles as the catcher also drove in three runs.

Game two’s victory gives head coach Randy Tenney his 500th career win. Tenney is now 500-290-6 in his 19+ seasons at Wesleyan.

Coach Tenney began his tenure in 1986 and has since won four conference championships (1991, ’92, ’95, ’96) and three WVIAC Coach of the Year awards (1991, ’92, ’99). His teams have appeared in the regional playoffs three times (1991, ’92, ’96).

In game one Pitt Johnstown scored two runs in the first inning on a Casey Long homerun and added another run in the third when a Long single plated Jeff Rolla

The three runs, all courtesy of Long, were enough to beat the Bobcats, 3-2.

Back-to-back doubles by Jackanich and Rozich put Wesleyan on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Rozich’s second RBI double in the sixth inning drew the ‘Cats closer, but it was not enough to overcome Brian Chruscial’s complete game performance.

Chruscial (2-1) scattered five hits over seven innings, giving up two runs, one earned, while striking out four and walking one.

Art Yerecic (Export, Pa.) took the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season. Yerecic threw two innings, giving up two runs on three hits.

Wesleyan remains at home for a four-game series with Ohio Valley University on Saturday and Sunday. Both doubleheaders begin at 1:00 p.m. at Hank Ellis Field.

Norman struck out 12 batters and walked just one while scattering four hits over seven innings.

Josh retired the Mansfield hitters in order in three of his seven innings. He also struck out the side in the top of the first after allowing a lead-off single.

The 1-0 victory was Norman’s first of the season. The game’s lone run came in the first inning when a Christian Rosado (Deltona, Fla.) two-out RBI single scored Nick Newberry (Peterstown).

BUCKHANNON, W.Va.—Junior Josh Norman (Wheeling) (1-0) struck out 12 batters and allowed just four hits in a complete game 1-0 shutout of Mansfield University on Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats split their first home games at Hank Ellis Field, dropping game two, 8-3.

A Christian Rosado (Deltona, Fla.) RBI single was all Norman needed in the opener. Nick Newberry (Peterstown) led off the game with a single to left and was moved over to second when Justin Rozich (Elkins) grounded out to third. Newberry then advanced to third when Eric Stettnisch (Woodbury, N.J.) flew out to right. Rosado’s two-out single to right center plated Newberry and gave the Bobcats the one and only run they needed to earn their first victory of 2006.

Josh retired the Mansfield hitters in order in three of his seven innings. He also struck out the side in the top of the first after allowing a lead-off single.

Newberry and Rosado were each 2-for-3 in the game.

Adam Lorson (1-1) took the loss. Lorson threw all six Mansfield innings. He also allowed just four hits.

In game two the Mansfield bats came alive scoring a run in the first, three in the second, and four in the third to top the ‘Cats, 8-3.

Matt Allegretto (1-1) picked up the win while Aaron Gallagher (Bridgeport) (0-1) took the loss.

Center fielder Ryan Wyland and shortstop Ryan Giblin had two hits apiece for the Mansfield. Three other Mounties recorded two RBI each to pace the offensive attack.

Newberry picked up another hit in game two to finish the afternoon 3-for-5.

Junior Jake Driggers (Plant City, Fla.) was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Driggers has hit safely in two of his three at-bats this season. Both hits and all three of his RBI have come in pinch-hitting roles.

Senior Justin Rozich drove in the Bobcats’ other two runs with a two-run homerun to left field in the fifth.

Wesleyan travels to Ormond Beach, Florida, next week. The Bobcats will play 12 games in eight days from March 11 through March 18.

‘Cats drop opener at Shepherd

March 3, 2006 - Box Score

SHEPERDSTOWN, W.Va.—The Shepherd University Rams (6-2, 0-0) used four home runs and a solid six innings from starter Scott McCormick to defeat West Virginia Wesleyan (0-1, 0-0),7-5, on Wednesday afternoon.

The teams were originally scheduled for a doubleheader but weather conditions allowed just one, nine-inning game to be played.

Shepherd scratched an early run across in the first inning but Wesleyan responded with a run of their own in the third.

Following another Shepherd run in the bottom of the fourth, the Bobcats grabbed a 3-2 lead with two runs in the top of the fifth.

The Rams regained the lead and won with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Scott McCormick (2-1) picked up his second win of the season for Shepherd. McCormick threw six innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits.

Senior Art Yerecic (Export, Pa.) took the loss after giving up six runs, five earned, over 4.1 innings pitched.

Dirk Webb pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his second save of the season. Webb also led the Rams offense going 2-for-3 with a homerun and three RBI.

Joe Cook provided a spark for Shepherd by hitting his seventh double and second homerun of the season. Cook was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Nicky Brown and Andrew McCormick hit Shepherd’s other two homeruns. All four of the Rams’ long balls were hit far enough to make it over the 330-foot power alley in left center.

The Bobcat offense swung the sticks well in their first game of the year. It was also just the second time the team had been outside since the fall.

Junior Eric Stettnisch (Woodbury, N.J.) was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Stettnisch was the only player to record more than one hit for Wesleyan.

Jake Driggers (Plant City, Fla.) drove in two runs on a pinch-hit single.

Second baseman Justin Rozich (Elkins) and shortstop Bobby Prim (Morgantown) each collected one hit and scored twice.

Wesleyan will face Mansfield University in 12:00 p.m. doubleheader at Ellis Field on Sunday, March 5. The teams were originally scheduled to play two games on Saturday and one on Sunday but field conditions have postponed the games until Sunday.

2006 Season Outlook
February 27, 2006

West Virginia Wesleyan will look to build around a lineup that boasts seven seniors and a pitching staff regarded as one of the best in the North Atlantic region in order to make it back to the WVIAC Tournament in Princeton, West Virginia.

Wesleyan’s major offensive strength will be the right side of the infield. Senior second baseman Justin Rozich (Elkins) (.377/4/29) and junior first baseman Eric Stettnisch (Woodbury, N.J.) (.379/6/31) accounted for nearly 30 percent of the club’s RBI and 10 of the team’s 17 homeruns in 2005.

Stettnisch led the Bobcats with a .379 average and was also first in homeruns (6), RBI (31), and slugging percentage (.642). He was named the first team All-WVIAC designated hitter.

Rozich returns after his second straight All-WVIAC season. He has been named the conference’s second-team second baseman for the past two years. Last year he led the Bobcats and was seventh in the WVIAC with a .481 on-base percentage. His three triples tied him with Bobby Prim for the team lead and gave him a career total of 11. He now sits just five triples behind Troy Robert’s (1990-93) career record of 16. In addition, Justin was second on the team in hits (40), home runs (4), RBI (29), and slugging percentage (.585). Only graduated senior Ricky Bergen had more hits (47). Justin finished behind Stettnisch in the remaining three categories.

Senior shortstop Bobby Prim (Morgantown) (.264/0/12) and senior catcher Steve Holdsworth (Morgantown) (.315/1/15) also return up the middle for the ‘Cats.

Prim drew a team-best 21 walks and connected for a team-leading three triples last season. Holdsworth did not record a single error in 177 chances.

Outfielders Mike Jackanich (Pacifica, Calif.) (.353/0/15) and Christian Rosado (Deltona, Fla.) (.254/0/13) return to their starting positions in left and right, respectively. Jackanich’s .571 average (12-for-21) with runners in scoring position was tops on the ‘Cats.

Junior Nick Newberry (Peterstown) (.297/0/8) and senior Marc Kimes (Vienna) will also see time in the outfield in 2006.

Senior Art Yerecic (Export, Pa.) (4.30/6-1/46.0) and junior Josh Norman (Wheeling) (3.77/3-3/45.1) anchor one of the top pitching staffs in the North Atlantic Region. The two upperclassmen, along with freshman standout Craig Hriblan (Martin, Pa.) (3.00/3-1, 7 SV/21.), return to lead a staff that finished third in the WVIAC in ERA last year. Wesleyan’s cumulative 4.90 ERA fell just short of Davis & Elkins’ 3.98 and conference champion West Virginia State’s 4.73.

Yerecic’s six wins was the most by any Bobcat pitcher. The senior also walked just eight batters and struck out 35 in his team-leading 46.0 innings pitched. He was named to All-WVIAC second team for his efforts.

Aside from tying Yerecic for the team lead in complete games (3), Norman ended 2005 second on Wesleyan in wins (3), strikeouts (37) and innings pitched (45.1).

Freshman Craig Hriblan (3.00/3-1, 7/21.0) moves into the starting rotation in 2006. As a freshman Hriblan led the ‘Cats in appearances (14) and saves (7). His seven saves tied him for the league lead, placed him 18th in the nation, and positioned him just three behind Joe Honce’s (1990-93) team-record 10 career saves.

Juniors Aaron Gallagher (Bridgeport) (3.79/2-1/19.0), Stettnisch (6.12/2-1/25.0), and Jason Kelley (Buckhannon) (6.08/0-0/13.1) are pitchers that will also see time on the mound in either a starting or relieving role.

Gallagher finished fourth on Wesleyan with a 3.79 ERA. Kelley fired a five-inning no-hitter against Point Park College last season.

Aside from finishing third in ERA, Wesleyan’s staff also led the West Virginia Conference in earned runs (149) and walks allowed (88). The ‘Cats will need performances such as these if they intend to reel off wins like they did at the end of last season. Winning 19 of their final 25 games, including a stretch in which they won eight in a row and 13 of 14, the Bobcats finished 14-4 in games decided by three runs or less. The team was 8-3 in one-run games. In 2006 the ‘Cats may use their staff to capacity by playing for that one run.

Newcomers Chris Cole (Sanford, Fla.) (3B) and Tyler Phares (Elkins) (P) are two of the team’s most promising freshman. Head coach Randy Tenney is seeking a significant contribution from each player.

Despite losing one of their top hitters in Ricky Bergen (.370/2/22) and their probable ace, David Beach (2.61/3-1/38.0), head coach Randy Tenney’s major concern is dealing with a schedule that features four teams receiving national consideration in preseason polls:

West Virginia State University - 6th in NCAA Div. II (44-16 in 2005)
Mansfield University (Pa.) - received votes in NCAA Div. II (28-18)
Bellevue University (Neb.) - 7th in NAIA (54-14)
Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) - received votes in NAIA (40-12)

“We certainly have a tough schedule ahead of us this season. There is no area in which we dominate. We will need to play well on both sides of the ball to be successful,” Tenney remarked.

The Bobcats were scheduled to play 11 games before heading down to Ormond Beach, Fla. for their annual spring trip. Due to their rainout against West Virginia State, they will now play seven games before departing. Five of those seven games will be played at Hank Ellis Field.

The early season home games provide a nice change for a team that played its first 18 games away from Ellis Field last season.

The consistent rain limited the ‘Cats to only 36 games in 2005, and 27 of those were played away from home.

This season’s 56-game schedule includes 21 home dates.

One major change for the 2006 season is that all WVIAC divisional games will be played in a four-game series format. Previously teams had played a doubleheader on Saturday followed by a nine-inning game on Sunday.

Wesleyan’s southern division opponents include: West Virginia State (44-16, 14-1), Concord (24-15, 10-6), WVU Tech (17-21, 7-5), Ohio Valley (12-28, 5-11), Charleston (10-32, 3-12), and Bluefield State (6-44, 2-14).

The Bobcats will also play Shepherd (19-20, 10-4), Davis & Elkins (33-22, 10-5), and Alderson Broaddus (9-32, 3-10)—all northern division teams.

A return to Ormond Beach awaits Wesleyan in early March. The team will play 12 games in eight days from March 11 through March 18.m

Baseball picked to finish third in Southern Division
February 20, 2006

PRINCETON, W.Va.—West Virginia Wesleyan (23-13, 10-2) baseball was picked to finish third behind West Virginia State (44-16, 14-1) and Concord (24-15, 10-6) in the WVIAC’s Southern Division, as voted on by the league’s 13 head coaches.

The Bobcat’s received little acknowledgement as they were not given a single first-place vote despite beating Concord, a team that was given one of the 12 Southern Division first-place votes, three consecutive games last season. Wesleyan swept the Mountain Lions in the teams’ regular season doubleheader, 3-1 and 4-2, and less than a week later won 2-1 in the Southern Division play-in game.

The 12 remaining Southern Division first-place votes were given to West Virginia State. Last season the Yellow Jackets advanced to the NCAA Division II World Series, but were knocked off by North Florida and Florida Southern. Florida Southern went on to beat North Florida, 12-9, in the championship game.

In the Northern Division, Davis & Elkins (33-22, 10-5) received eight first-place votes while Shepherd (19-20, 10-4) and Fairmont State (17-22, 10-5) received four votes and one vote, respectively.

West Virginia State also received 10 votes to Davis & Elkins’ two and Fairmont State’s one in voting to determine the overall league title.

*WVU Tech will compete in the WVIAC but will not be eligible for the playoffs.
