‘Cats down Charleston, eliminated by Shepherd

Kyle HoffmanCHARLESTON, W.Va.—The Bobcats opened play in the 2006 WVIAC Tournament with a 5-2 quarterfinal match win over fifth-seeded University of Charleston on Friday morning, but were eliminated in the semifinals by the top-seeded Shepherd Rams, 5-2, later that afternoon.

In the quarterfinals, the ‘Cats jumped out to an early 2-1 lead by grabbing victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

Dominick Mack (Montoursville, Pa.) and Kyle Hoffman (Fairmont) were victorious at No. 2 while Michael Higgins (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and Joseph Jiblets (Canonsburg, Pa.) picked up the team’s No. 3 doubles win.

Singles wins by Mack (6-4, 6-3), Bryan Corder (Elkins) (6-1, 3-6, 6-3), and Hoffman (6-1, 6-2) secured the team’s advancement into the next round.

Wesleyan’s semifinal match pitted them against number-one seeded Shepherd for the second time in three days.

The Rams took the match 5-2.

Higgins and Jiblets teamed up for an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.

Hoffman won the team’s lone singles match, 6-3, 6-2.

Wesleyan ends the 2006 season 8-5 overall.

Bobcats fall to Shepherd on Senior Day

Dominick MackBUCKHANNON, W.Va.—The 2006 WVIAC regular season champion Shepherd Rams defeated West Virginia Wesleyan, 8-1, on Tuesday at the Sam Ross Tennis Center in Buckhannon.

The Bobcats’ Dominick Mack (Montoursville, Pa.) and Kyle Hoffman (Fairmont) earned the team’s lone Senior Day win at No. 2 doubles. Mack and Hoffman knocked off Shepherd’s Eric Stevenson and Arthur Ebeling, 8-5.

Wesleyan ends the 2006 regular season with an overall record of 7-4. The team was 6-3 in the WVIAC. The Rams close out their schedule at 13-10 overall, 8-0 in the West Virginia Conference.

Shepherd captures the top seed in this weekend’s WVIAC Tournament in Charleston. The ‘Cats are the fourth seed and will battle the fifth-seeded Charleston Golden Eagles on Friday at 9:00 a.m.

Wesleyan defeats Concord and State, falls to Salem

Kyle HoffmanBUCKHANNON, W.Va.—West Virginia Wesleyan men’s tennis played three matches, winning two of them, over the last three days against fellow WVIAC schools.

The Bobcats defeated Concord, 7-2, and West Virginia State, 8-1, on Sunday, before falling to Salem International, 6-3, on Tuesday.

Lee Underwood’s team is now 7-3 overall and 6-2 in the West Virginia Conference.

Kyle Hoffman (Fairmont) led the ‘Cats with a perfect record over the three-match span. The senior was 3-0 at No. 2 doubles and picked up two wins at No. 5 singles and one win at No. 4 singles. Hoffman is the first Bobcat to reach double digits in both singles and doubles victories this season; he is 11-1 in singles matches and 10-2 in doubles matches.

Teaming up with Hoffman for two No. 2 doubles wins was senior Dominick Mack (Montoursville, Pa.). Mack also won his third doubles match, an 8-0 victory over West Virginia State. Dominick is currently 5-7 and 12-1 in singles and doubles matches, respectively. He has played No. 1 singles in nine of the team’s 10 matches this season.

Michael Higgins (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) also posted a solid 2-1 record in both his singles and doubles matches the last few days. Higgins is 9-2 in singles and 10-3 in doubles matches so far.

Wesleyan will host defending conference champion Shepherd University on Wednesday, April 19, at 4:00 p.m. The match, which is to be played at the Sam Ross Tennis Center, is the team’s last regular season match before heading to Charleston for the WVIAC Tournament April 20 through April 22.

Men’s tennis topples Fairmont State

Michael HigginsFAIRMONT, W.Va.—West Virginia Wesleyan earned their third straight WVIAC victory with an 8-1 win over the Fairmont State Falcons on Wednesday evening.

The Bobcats (5-2, 4-1 WVIAC) will host Concord and Shepherd this Saturday afternoon at the Sam Ross Tennis Center.

The regularly scheduled Concord match will begin at 1:00 p.m. and the team’s makeup match against Shepherd will follow at 3:30 p.m.

‘Cats crush Bluefield State

The team is now 4-2 overall, 3-1 in the West Virginia Conference.

Wesleyan will hit the road to battle the Falcons of Fairmont State on Tuesday, April 4, at 6:00 p.m.

Bobcats oust Golden Eagles

West Liberty tops Wesleyan

Kyle HoffmanBETHANY, W.Va.—West Virginia Wesleyan men’s tennis fell to West Liberty State, 6-3, in WVIAC action on Wednesday in Bethany, West Virginia.

The team, which is now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the West Virginia Conference, was led by Kyle Hoffman (Fairmont).

Hoffman was victorious at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-2, and also teamed up with Dominick Mack (Montoursville, Pa.) for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

Mack fell to Justin Thomas in his No. 1 singles match, 6-1, 6-4.

The ‘Cats’ other singles match victory was a Michael Higgins (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) straight-set win at No. 5.

Wesleyan returns to the Sam Ross Tennis Center to battle the University of Charleston on Saturday, April 1, at 11:00 a.m.

Men’s Tennis dominates in conference opener

Dominick MackBUCKHANNON, W.Va.—West Virginia Wesleyan men’s tennis dominated visiting WVU Tech 9-0 on Monday afternoon at the Sam Ross Tennis Complex. The Bobcats lost only one game during the one hour and 15 minute match.

The team’s home opener was also their first WVIAC action of the season. Wesleyan’s victory improves their record to 2-1 overall, 1-0 in the West Virginia Conference.

Next up for the ‘Cats is a match against defending conference champion, Shepherd University. Wesleyan hosts the Rams on Saturday, March 25, at 2:30 p.m.
