BUCKHANNON, W.Va.-In their last doubleheader before the WVIAC tournament, Wesleyan battled it out with West Liberty State College. The Lady ‘Cats slid by the Toppers 2-1 in the first game while West Liberty grabbed the second game 6-5.

A single from Miranda Durst (Point Pleasant, W.Va.) advanced Shannon Moxey (Richmond, Va.) home. Lara Foster (Catlett, Va.) batted in Ashley Blandford (LaPlata, Md.) for the 2-0 lead.

The Lady Bobcat defense kept the Toppers scoreless until the sixth inning. Dani Mohney hit a sacrifice fly to send Jessica Smith home.

Overall, Wesleyan had 11 hits to West Liberty’s four. Winning pitcher, Cory Karcesky (Dunkirk, Md.) had three strike outs for the game.

Durst brought Blandford home with a single down the left side. West Liberty’s defense did not let Wesleyan get any more runs and closed the inning with two Lady ‘Cats on base.

The scene of bases loaded came for the second time in the game but now the Lady Bobcats were the ones trying to hold their ground. With only one out, the Toppers were in position to score. Wesleyan’s defense, however, did not heed to the pressure. Blandford caught a line drive and tagged out the runner on first for the double play and ended the top of the fourth.

In the second inning, Hall stepped up with Keith and Bilotta on base. Hall knocked a homer to push Wesleyan’s lead to 8-0. Baise was next in line to bat, following Hall’s footsteps by hitting another one out of the park.

Moxey, Bilotta, and Baise captured an RBI apiece in the top of the third.

Starting pitcher Kendall Pittock (Prince George, Va.) notched five strikeouts and took the win. Glenville could only get one hit off Wesleyan for the game.

The Lady ‘Cats remain undefeated in the WVIAC. Tomorrow they match-up against the University of Charleston. The home doubleheader is set for 3:00 p.m.

Wesleyan shuts out Glenville

April 7, 2006 - Game 1 Box Score / Game 2 Box Score

BUCKHANNON, W.Va-Wesleyan shut out Glenville 16-0 and 12-0 on Thursday's WVIAC match-up. The Lady ‘Cats wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in game one. Meghan Keith (Morgantown, W.Va.) was the first one in, scoring off Glenville's catcher’s throw to second. Kareen Bilotta (Fairmont, W.Va.) then hit a double through the right side to push Shannon Moxey (Richmond, Va.) home. Heather Hall (Sunderland, Md.) stepped up to bat and knocked a mammoth of a homer for the 4-0 lead.

The Lady Bobcats were just getting warmed up in first inning as the bottom of the second saw seven more runs for Wesleyan. Racking in the RBIs were Sarah Baise (South Point, Ohio) and Lara Foster (Catlett, Va.) with two apiece and Keith, Lyndsey Lemon (Little Hocking, Ohio), and Jana White (White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.) with one each.

Five more Lady ‘Cats crossed home plate in the third inning. Miranda Durst’s (Point Pleasant, W.Va.) single to left field allowed Moxey to score. With bases loaded, Lemon knocked out a grand slam to give Wesleyan the 16-0 lead.

Pitcher Cory Karcesky (Dunkirk, Md.) took away the win. Glenville was unable to get a hit off her and only posted two hits for the game.

Game two held much of the same fate for the Pioneers. The Lady Bobcats put home seven runners in the first inning. With three runners on, Baise was hit by a pitch and earned an RBI. Foster stepped up and cleared the bases. It was Wesleyan’s second grand slam of the day. Two more runners came in, one off a double from White and one from Keith’s triple.

The bottom of the second saw more action when Foster singled to advance Bilotta home. Durst popped one over the fence to up the score 10-0.

Off a single from Hall, Keith scored in the third inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Durst hit her second homer of the day to finalize the game 12-0.

Glenville could not get their bats swinging as they only saw one hit in the second game. Kendal Pittock (Prince George, Va.) earned the pitching win.

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va.-The first two games of the West Liberty Tournament went rather well for the Lady ‘Cats as they defeated Salem International 4-0 and 9-1. Wesleyan, however, could not get a win after that, falling to SIU Edwardsville 5-1, Southern Indiana 7-6, and Gannon University 1-0.

On Saturday, April 1, the Lady Bobcats started out strong against the Tigers. In the bottom of the second, Lyndsey Lemon (Little Hocking, Ohio) got the scoring rolling with a single to left field. Sarah Baise (South Point, Ohio) advanced home off Lemon’s hit. A triple from Jana White (White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.) pushed in Lemon and Lara Foster (Catlett, Va.) for a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Bobcats’ defense remained solid and kept the Tigers scoreless. The final run from Wesleyan came in the sixth inning when Baise knocked it over the fence.

Cory Karcesky (Dunkirk, Md) picked up the pitching win and improved her overall record to 13-1.

Playing Salem in the second match-up, Wesleyan’s bats were swinging. The Lady ‘Cats pushed in nine runs and totaled 13 hits for the game.

First baseman Shannon Moxey (Richmond, Va.) led her team with four RBIs. Meghan Keith (Morgantown, W.Va.), Heather Hall (Sunderland, Md.), Foster, and White all notched one RBI apiece.

Salem’s lone run came in the top of the second.

Earning the pitching win was Kendall Pittock (Prince George, Va.).

Wesleyan next played SIU Edwardsville in their last game of the day. SIU was up 2-0 after the close of the third inning. The Lady ‘Cats could only get one run in off a hit by Hall before SIU tallied three more runs to the board. The game gave Wesleyan their first loss of the tourney.

The tournament resumed Sunday morning as Wesleyan headed off against Southern Indiana. Starting strong, the Lady ‘Cats led in the first part of the game.

In the top of the second, Wesleyan piled home four runs. Lemon knocked in the first run, Keith singled for the second, and Moxey doubled to advance two more runners home.

The Lady ‘Cats were able to get another run in the third inning to lead the game 5-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Southern Indiana rallied back to a 5-5 tie. A homerun followed by two doubles allowed three runners to score. Then with a runner on third the Eagles knocked another one out of the park to post two more RBIs and tie the game.

The tie, however, did not last long as Moxey’s single to right field allowed White to come home in the top of the sixth. Wesleyan was back up 6-5.

It came down to the bottom of the seventh and Southern Indiana was not leaving without a fight. The Eagles were hitting and after three singles they advanced home the tying run. With a runner on third, Southern Indiana won the game 7-6 off a wild pitch.

Wesleyan received their third loss of the weekend when they matched up against Gannon University. The last time the two teams met Wesleyan won 5-2.

Hitting was slim for both squads. Gannon got off six hits to Wesleyan's four, but it was the Knights’ homerun in the top of the fourth that won the game 1-0.

Wesleyan will play a home doubleheader on Wednesday, April 5. They match-up against Glenville State with the first pitch set for 2:00 p.m.

Coach Warner earns 500th career win after Ohio Valley doubleheader

March 31, 2006 - Game 1 Box Score / Game 2 Box Score

BUCKHANNON, W.Va.-Coach Warner had no trouble earning his 500th career win as his team sailed past Ohio Valley 7-3 and 9-0.

Warner can add this career accomplishment to the list of honors he has obtained in his 13+ years of coaching. Under his belt as head coach for the Lady 'Cats are nine WVIAC Coach of the Year awards, eleven conference championships, and eight regional tournament appearances. Before the 2006 season began, Warner was ranked 22nd as the NCAA’s Winningest Coaches of All-Time and ranked 10th for Division II alone.

The Lady ‘Cats had little difficulty in beating the Fighting Scots to give Warner win number 500. In game one, Wesleyan’s defense left Ohio Valley scoreless until the top of the seventh. The Lady Bobcats’ offense got off to a quick start, snagging three runs in the first inning.

A double by Kareen Bilotta (Fairmont, W.Va.) started off the runs as she knocked in Shannon Moxey (Richmond, Va.). Bilotta later got her chance to score when Sarah Baise (South Point, Ohio) hit a sacrifice fly. The third run came off a single through the right side by Lara Foster (Catlett, Va.). Heather Hall (Sunderland, Md.) advanced home for the 3-0 lead.

The bottom of the second was much like the first. Wesleyan pushed up the score 6-0. With bases loaded, Baise stepped up to the plate. She hammered out a triple to earn three RBIs. Bilotta, Moxey, and Jana White (White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.) were all hit home.

It was not until the fifth inning that Wesleyan chalked up their seventh run. Designated player Melissa Brown (Kalamazoo, Mich.) doubled up the middle to get on base. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Brown scored off White’s ground out to shortstop.

Ohio Valley finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. The Fighting Scots pushed home three runs in the final inning. Wesleyan, however, took the win 7-3.

First basemen Moxey tallied twelve put-outs and her infielders shared the wealth in assists. Baise posted five, Bilotta had four, and Hall snagged three. Pitcher Kendall Pittock (Prince George, Va.) received the win.

Wesleyan took little time to play the second game against Ohio Valley, ending the match-up after the top of the fifth. The Lady Bobcats shut-out the Fighting Scots 9-0.

Once again in the bottom of the first, Wesleyan got in three runs. Hall, Baise, and Lyndsey Lemon (Little Hocking, Ohio) all batted in runners.

The Lady Bobcats continued the offensive action in the second and third innings. In the bottom of the second, Baise doubled to left field allowing Bilotta and Meghan Keith (Morgantown, W.Va.) to score.

Wesleyan’s lead was boosted to 9-0 in the bottom of the third. White knocked home the first run of the inning with a double through the right side.

A double by Keith put her on second and White advanced to third. The bases became loaded after Moxey walked. It was then that a wild pitch started a scoring frenzy.

White came home off the pitch while Keith and Moxey each took a base. An overthrow by OVU’s catcher gave Keith the green light to run home and Moxey to move to third. The Fighting Scots' frazzled chain reaction continued as their pitcher overthrew it past the catcher. Moxey scored on this second error and the bases were cleared.

After a one, two, three in the top of the fifth the game ended on account of the eight-run rule.

Cory Karcesky (Dunkirk, Md.) grabbed the pitching win. She posted seven strike-outs and the shut-out. The Fighting Scots were only able to get off one hit for the game.

For the doubleheader, Baise lead her team with six RBIs.

Wesleyan is back in action on Saturday, April 1. They head to West Liberty for tournament play.

SPARTANBURG, S.C.-Wesleyan traveled to South Carolina to participate in the FATZ Café Classic over the weekend. The Lady ‘Cats had a strong showing and left with a 6-2 tournament record. USC Upstate was the only team that halted Wesleyan.

On Friday, March 3, the Lady Bobcats first headed up against the Spartans. USC Upstate got off to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and scored six more runs in the third. Wesleyan was unable to combat offensively, only notching two hits for the game. The Spartans won 8-0.

Wesleyan recovered quickly from this loss, beating both North Greenville and Presbyterian College later that day.

Against the Crusaders, the Lady ‘Cats jumped to a firm lead in the first inning. Ashley Blandford (LaPlata, Md.) got Wesleyan on the board 2-0 with a homerun that put in Kareen Bilotta (Fairmont, W.Va.) and herself.

With bases loaded, Shannae Proud (Cresaptown, Md.) walked, pushing in Heather Hall (Sunderland, Md.). A sacrifice fly by Jana White (White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.) allowed Sarah Baise (South Point, Ohio) to come home. Wesleyan closed the inning up 4-0.

The game remained quite until the top of the fourth when Wesleyan tallied up more seven runs.

Meghan Keith (Fairmont, W.Va.) doubled with two runners on, sending them both home. Then an error by North Greenville gave Keith the opportunity to score.

With the bases loaded, Baise stepped up to bat and knocked away a grand slam.

Ahead 11-0, Melissa Brown (Kalamazoo, Mich.) scored off Hall’s single.

Cory Karcesky (Dunkirk, Md.) earned the pitching win. She held the Spartans to two hits and notched four strikeouts.

The last game of the day was against Presbyterian College. Wesleyan left the field with the 8-4 win.

The first inning Wesleyan got in three runs. After a single by White, Bilotta homered for the 2-0 lead. With two outs, Baise knocked it over the center field fence.

The Blue Hose, however, retaliated back with two runs in the bottom of the first to close the gap 3-2.

Baise got her second homerun of the game in the third inning and cleared Hall from first.

In the fourth inning, White and Shannon Moxey (Richmond, Va.) scored off Blandford’s single.

Presbyterian posted their next run in the bottom of the fourth.

Both teams each scored a run in the sixth inning, and the game ended 8-4 Wesleyan. Pitcher Colby Cooper (Rehoboth Beach, Del.) received the win and struck out four batters.

On Saturday, tournament play continued. The Lady Bobcats faced the Spartans again and the result was déjà vu from the previous contest. USC Upstate took the game 8-0.

UNC Pembroke was Wesleyan’s next opponent. The game remained tight as neither team could get on the board. Cooper held the Braves to only two hits for the entire game.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Bobcats rallied for the win. Hall hit two homeruns for the inning, clearing in a total of five runs. Also earning RBIs were Cooper, Moxey, White, and Bilotta with one apiece. The nine run streak was enough to end the game early on account of the eight-run rule.

The final game of the FATZ Café Classic for the Lady Bobcats was a rematch with the Blue Hose. Unlike the first contest, this one stayed close.

Strong defense by both teams kept the score 0-0. In the fourth inning, Wesleyan finally opened up the scoring. Baise’s single to left field gave Bilotta the opportunity to get home and give the Lady ‘Cats a marginal lead.

The Baise-Bilotta duo racked in another run in the top of the sixth for a 2-0 advantage.

Tension began to build in the bottom of the seventh when Presbyterian’s first two batters hit doubles, pushing one run in and leaving one runner on second. An error by Wesleyan and a fielder’s choice allowed the bases to become loaded with no outs.

The Blue Hose needed one run to tie the game and another for the win. Shortstop Hall caught two line-outs to halt any action home. A flyball to White in centerfield gave Wesleyan the much needed third out.

Karcesky was credited with the pitching win.

For the weekend, Karcesky and Cooper both pitched 2-0.

Hitting hard for Wesleyan was Baise and Hall. Baise averaged .500 for the tournament and tallied up 13 RBIs, nine runs, and five homers. Hall pushed in nine RBIs and totaled nine runs. She knocked it out of the park three times. Junior Bilotta was also high in stats with a .542 hitting percent, four RBIs, and seven runs.

Wesleyan takes off on Thursday for their spring break trip. They play a round of games in Savannah, Georgia before heading to a tournament in Orlando, Florida. On their way back to Buckhannon, the Lady ‘Cats will stop in South Carolina for another tourney.
