2005 Bobcat Invitational
Bobcats Win Comfortably on Both Sides
April 6, 2005
Wesleyan took care of business at it's own meet for the second consecutive year, setting a few milestones in the process. The men's 4x100-meter relay team of T.R. Dues, Adrian Brown, Leonard McLean, and Sloan Baisden set a new school record, stopping the watches in 41.93 seconds. Frances Carvajal, the only Bobcat to go to nationals in 2004, qualified again for the shot put tonight, but doubled her stake by writing her ticket to Texas in the discus as well.

Bobcat Track Programs Eyeing Back-to-Back Crowns
March 31, 2005
Coach Skiles and his staff are approaching the 2005 campaign with very cautious optimism. Many of the stars from last season return, lending plenty of positive aspirations. But several critical losses have left some gaping holes in the roster.
Several big scorers from the distance corps shed their orange and black uniforms in favor of graduation. The losses include all-conference middle-distance stars Brent Garrett and Kelly Terhune, school steeplechase record-holder Ann Nakai, and WVIAC 800-meter runner-up Beth Bridgewater.
But with another strong freshman class, both Bobcat teams should remain in the title hunt in 2005. The following is a look at each event area of the squad.
MEN’S EVENTS
Sprints
This area figures to be a strong suit for the Bobcats as several big points return. The 4x400 relay won the league title in 2004, and the 4x100 team fell just shy of duplicating the effort. All four members from the 4x100 team and three members of the 4x400 squad return to go after yet another title this season. Individually, the duo of Adrian Brown and Rico Greenhowe placed second and third, respectively, in the 400-meter race at the WVIAC meet last year with Brown also garnering a third place finish in the 200-meter event. Jason Koon stopped the watches in second in both the 100-meter and 200-meter runs.
T.R. Dues returns after a year away from the squad, and will be joined by talented freshman Sloan Baisden in the shorter sprints. Add in the skills of Johnadam Romeo, Leonard McLean, and Jeremy Vickers, and this should be a very deep event area for the ‘Cats.
Hurdles
2004 WVIAC Most Valuable Performer Josh Natali won both the hurdle races in 2004 and returns to defend those titles this season. The sophomore standout will be complemented in the high hurdles by Chad Jordan and Zach Barlow, and Barlow and freshman Josh Abbott will add support in the intermediates. Veteran sprinter McLean has also added the 400-meter hurdles to his repertoire.
Throws
Junior Brad Wilt leads a promising group of throwers. Wilt has been a double-figure scorer in each of his first two league meets and his hoping for more in ’05. Freshman discus specialist Tyler Blatchley should provide an immediate impact, as should fellow rookie Tim Williams in the shot put.
Jumps
Former state champions Adam Mason and Josh Boone lead a deep high jump corps, while star veteran Andy Shingle heads a strong group in the horizontal jumps.
Junior Stephen Zirilli should add depth in the high jump, as should freshmen Dustin Jones and Daniel Watson in the long and triple jumps. Hurdler Zach Barlow and javelin thrower Anthony Collins are also capable triple jumpers. Freshman Evan Wolfe is a developing pole vault specialist, the first for the program in several years.
Middle-Distance
Wesleyan swept both mid-distance races in 2004 with junior Zach Beckett capturing the 800-meter run and Brent Garrett clipping the tape in the 1,500-meter event. Garrett has been lost to graduation, but Beckett returns to defend his title. A strong group of “middies,” including Justin Rogers, Michael King, Jared Oliver, Jonathan Gohrband, University of Charleston transfer Jon Miller, and sprinter Rico Greenhowe should provide tremendous depth in these events.
Distance
Junior Jason Gurney leads a distance group that also includes steeplechaser Justin Faith and freshman John Thompson. The trio of Dylan Drinkard, Steven Nutter, and Woody Snoberger has all been declared red-shirts for this season and will be sorely missed from the rotation in 2005.
WOMEN’S EVENTS
Sprints
An area that has been down the last five years, the sprinting corps should show some promise in 2005. 400-meter specialist Sarah Keller returns from an injury plagued 2004 campaign and is joined by freshmen Celia Gottschling and Teal Morrison. With the added depth, both relay teams should also show improvement this season.
Hurdles
With eight hurdlers in the group, this is easily the deepest event area for the Lady ‘Cats. The high hurdle squad includes senior Liann Gottschling, juniors Lori Coffman and Brandi Johns, and freshmen Emily Henley and Jesse Natali. In the intermediates, senior Cortney Bloomer, sophomore Laura Tamea, and freshman Caitlin Boggs supply more strength to an already stout corps of athletes.
Jumps
With a trio of talented jumpers in Britney Amodio, Niki Daniel, and Caitlin Redding, the high jump is a key event for the Lady Bobcats. In the pole vault, freshman Nicole White is back from injury and will challenge for the WVIAC event crown.
In the horizontal jumps, the triple jump is the deepest event. Redding, Daniel, Amodio, Ashley Chipley, and Brianna Darrin provide a strong unit. Laura Tamea leads a long jump squad that is complemented by Daniel, Darrin, and heptathlete Emily Henley.
Throws
This event area carried the Lady Bobcats to the 2004 conference title. League MVP and national qualifier Frances Carvajal returns to defend her titles in the discus, hammer throw, and shot put. LaShawna Moss, Kate Clark, and Emily Facemyer also return after scoring in last season’s WVIAC championships. They will be joined by talented freshmen Vanessa Michel in the shot put, Lauren Lombard in the discus, and Dana Snyder in the javelin.
Middle-Distance
With a major void left due to the graduation of WVIAC Track Athlete of the Year Kelly Terhune, there is much work to do for the Lady ‘Cat “middies.” Tackling this task is the 800-meter group of Danielle Painter, Megan Docherty, and freshman Beth McNeil. In the 1,500-meter event, the group of LaTora Keigley, Annie Schuerger, and Stefanie Trifilo look to step up and score big in the 2005 championships.
Distance
After capturing the program’s ninth cross country title in ten years in the fall, a deep, proven group of long distance runners is set for the 2005 track campaign. Junior Stephanie Hatfield returns to defend her WVIAC 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter event crowns, and is flanked by a skillful group that includes Leah Erenrich, Hannah Kovarik, Amanda Griffith, Danielle Blonar, Hanna Jo Robinson, and Jill Walker
Wesleyan Sweeps Track and Field Championships
Both the men’s and women’s track and field teams brought home the 2004 WVIAC Championship Monday after the meet which was held at Wheeling Jesuit University.
