Men's Soccer Downs Urbana (OH) 3-1
Released: 9/12/2009 7:37:17 PM

The Wesleyan men's soccer team rebounded well from their recent loss at Slippery Rock with a 3-1 home victory against Urbana (OH) on Saturday afternoon.

Brett Fackenthal opened the scoring in the eighth minute, heading in a corner kick from Joe John's to take an early 1-0 lead.

Urbana evened the score at 1-1 with ten minutes remaining in the first half when a free kick took a bad hop off of a Wesleyan defender for an own goal.

The Bobcats regained the lead, 2-1, 49 seconds into the second half when Kurt Donaldson (pictured) scored from 30-yards out. Wesleyan expanded the lead to 3-1 in the 66th minute on another corner, this time from Alister Flemining to Kerry Bristow who headed it past the goal keeper.

Following Bristow's goal, the Bobcats clamped down on defense to maintain the lead. Wesleyan out shot Urbana 10-2 and held a 7-1 edge on corner kicks. Both teams committed 21 fouls apiece with Urbana's Adam Craddick and Robbie Frank each receiving yellow cards.

"I thought the guys played through the second half with excellent control and poise," head coach Gavin Donaldson said. "As a team, we played well in the second half to close it out the way we had hoped, which is to apply pressure and prevent opportunities."

The Bobcats, who improved to 2-3 on the season, return to action on the road Wednesday night at 7 PM against West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) rival Wheeling Jesuit.
