Senior Wesleyan men's track star Ricky Kump (picured) turned in a strong showing during day one of the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Charlotte, NC on Thursday. Kump, who was one of 12 national qualifiers in the decathlon, sits in third place with 3,741 points after five events. He is just seven points off of second place.
Kump began the day with a second place finish in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.11 seconds. After ninth place finishes in the long jump at 5.98 meters and the shot put at 11.36 meters, Kump set a new personal record in the high jump with a second place jump of 1.98 meters.
In the final event of the day in the 400 meter dash Kump recorded another second place finish with a time of 48.63.
Kump will begin day two of the decathlon at 10 a.m. on Friday. The remaining events are the 110 meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and the 1,500 meter run.
"Ricky had a solid first day across the board highlighted by his personal record in the high jump," said head track and field coach Jesse Skiles. "He is in excellent position to make a run at being an All-American. We are looking for him to have a strong finish now on day 2."
The top eight finishers in the decathlon earn All-American honors.
Kevoy Douglas, Wesleyan's second NCAA qualifer will race in the 200 meter dash preliminaries at 6 p.m. on Friday.
