With a fifth place finish in the decathlon at the NCAA Track and Field Championships on Friday, Wesleyan senior Ricky Kump (pictured) became the newest member of the Bobcat All-American club.
Kump entered the Friday in third place with a score of 3,741 points after five events. The day began with the 110 meter hurdles in which Kump placed seventh to push him into second place overall.
After a 12th place finish in the discus at 31.20 meters and a tenth place finish in the pole vault at 3.75 meters Kump was in need of a strong finish to remain in contention.
A strong finish was exactly what Kump got, finishing eighth in the javelin with a throw of 46.01 meters before turning in a third place performance in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:34.23.
With his fifth place overall finish, Kump becomes the first Bobcat track and field athlete since Tyler Blatchley in 2008 to earn All-American status.
Kump finished the two-day event with 6,770 total points which earned Wesleyan four points as a team at the national meet.
"I am really proud of Ricky's effort," said head Wesleyan track and field coach Jesse Skiles. "I am also proud of coach Grant Burton and the work he did with our multi crew. It was a fitting way for Ricky to end his career here at Wesleyan."
Kevoy Douglas, who also qualified for the NCAA meet in the 200 meter dash, is scheduled to run at 6:15 p.m. on Friday. However, the meet is currently in a rain delay. Check back later for a recap from Douglas' pursuit of a championship.
