Program Unites Students released: 12/12/01 |
In
the wake of the September 11 tragedy, a new program has formed on Wesleyan's
campus to promote understanding between the world's cultures. The International
Bridge Program pairs students participating in the Bonner Scholars Program
with Wesleyan international students to share language skills and foster
greater knowledge of cultural differences.Forty students are currently participating in the International Bridge Program, with Wesleyan senior Khanh Thai serving as the group's student leader. Bonner Program Director LeeAnn Brown and International Student Advisor Joan Harman serve in an advisory capacity. Students spend time together each week discussing language difficulties and practicing real-life skills as well as sharing what makes their countries unique. Students gathered recently to cook and enjoy their own Thanksgiving feast. For several of the international students, it was their first exposure to the American holiday. In the spirit of the day, each person in attendance took a moment to share with the group what they were thankful for. After enjoying a delicious selection of desserts including the traditional pumpkin pie, students drew names for a Christmas ornament exchange for the upcoming International Bridge Christmas party. Future events for the group will include visits to local elementary schools to share customs and experiences and possibly a visit to a regional cultural event. |
