Cats on the Run
released: 02/06/02
The men's basketball coaching staff at West Virginia Wesleyan College is all smiles this year, primarily because the Bobcats stand at an overall record of 14-5, (9-2 in the WVIAC conference) and is ranked fourth in the NCAA Division II East Region. They're also pleased because the Bobcats have bested a pair of opponents they have not beaten in years, the University of Charleston (100-79) and Fairmont State College (84-68).

The Cats are lead by outstanding seniors, Brooklyn, NY native, and All-WVIAC first-teamer Damien Jackson, Chicago, IL native, and All-WVIAC second-teamer Jamar Thompkins and junior college transfer Richard Linsey.

The powerful Damien Jackson has been the Cats go-to player. His strong inside-outside, versatile style of play has proven to be a dominant force in the WVIAC. Jackson is averaging 21.1 points per game and is pulling down 5.7 rebounds per game.

His quick and graceful counterpart, Jamar Thompkins, is not only one of the WVIAC's best rebounders, he is ranked 3rd in the NCAA Division II East Region with an 11 boards and 15.1 points per game average.

Richard Linsey brings slashing offense, outside shooting, and tenacious rebounding to the Bobcat squad. Linsey is averaging 13.5 points and 6 rebounds per game, and has accumulated 42 steals this season, fourth best in the conference.

The Bobcats have climbed as high as a number 4 rank in the NCAA Division II East Region, and a top presence in the WVIAC. Continued success by its senior leadership should help propel the Bobcats into unchartered waters, a post-season regional appearance.

The West Virginia Wesleyan College women's basketball team had a rocky start to its 2001- 02 season, but it is now solidly on track. After starting 0-9, the Lady Bobcats now stand at 9-10, including a turnaround 8-game winning streak. Most recently, Wesleyan defeated NCAA Division II number 6-ranked Wheeling Jesuit University 71-43.

The turnaround was sparked as the Lady Bobcats made history with a 107-101 victory over Fairmont State College. The 4-overtime game made it the second longest NCAA Division II women's game in history and the longest WVIAC contest ever. In the extra periods, Wesleyan scored 38 points while both teams combined for 70 points to break the previous NCAA Division II records of 36 and 68, respectively, set in 1987.
