Wesleyan's Donaldson and James Receive "Coach of the Year" Awards
released: 12/12/01

Each year the coaches in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) meet at the end of soccer season and vote on which coaches most deserve to be recognized based on their teams' accomplishments in the conference for that year. At the ending season meeting in November, Gavin Donaldson and Anthony James were each selected as "Coach of the Year."

Donaldson is the men's soccer coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College (WVWC). This is the fourth time Coach Donaldson has received this honor for the conference. Donaldson has a career record of 210-95-21. He has been a college head coach for 16 years, 11 of which have been at Wesleyan. The men's soccer team has not had a losing season since 1971, and Donaldson led the Bobcats in their 18th conference championship this year. Donaldson's hard work and dedication to his team is very much appreciated and expressed by junior defender Andrew Schoenle, "Coach Donaldson is a coach who will not only help you become a better soccer player but will help you become a better winner."

The women's Bobcat soccer team, led by Coach James, finished an excellent season with a 13-6 record in the regular season and a 3-0 record in the post season, winning their conference championship. James was previously the soccer coach at Wheeling Park High School and won this award twice in his conference.

He was also voted West Virginia High School "Coach of the Year" two out of three years. While at Wheeling Park, his soccer teams won two state championships and finished with a record of 22-0 in the 1999 season. His final record was 59-6-1. Since taking over the WVWC program a year ago, the lady Bobcats have compiled a record of 27-15. Sophomore center midfielder Rukmini MacDonald shared her gratitude toward James and his efforts as a coach, "James's enthusiasm as a coach adds to our enthusiasm to play. He is a great coach and friend to whom any one of us can go to at anytime to talk about a problem, whether it be on or off the field. We would not be conference champs without him."
