Wesleyan Presents Stations of the Cross
released: 03/22/02
The Chapel Office at West Virginia Wesleyan College will present a walk through the Stations of the Cross Monday, March 25, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, March 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (in place of the regularly scheduled Chapel service). The Stations journey will begin in Chambers Lounge at the back of Martin Religious Center. Groups will leave at regular intervals and will take approximately 20 minutes to walk through all of the stations

Stations of the Cross is a devotion that walks with Jesus during the last week of his life. While the remembered actions span over seven days, the message of each station rings as clear today as it did in Jerusalem thousands of years ago. The journey of the Stations of the Cross provides all people with the experience of seeing the suffering of Christ.

This special event also gives individuals the ability to participate in a long held ritual of the church. “The practice of Stations of the Cross dates back to the fourth century C.E.,” comments senior Bill Lizor, one of the event planners. “Christians would take pilgrimages through the area believed to be the actual path of the cross in Jerusalem.”

“This moving experience is a wonderful addition to anyone’s celebration of Holy Week,” notes another of the event planners, senior Michael Sniffen. Through the 14 Stations of the Cross, participants see firsthand the somber yet passionate emotions that fill the Holy Week, leading to the crucifixion. The journey through the Stations of the Cross provides an excellent way for all people to explore the claims of Christ and to decide how those claims relate to their own lives.
