| WVWC Receives Grant Money and Commissions the Artistic Director of the Dance Alloy released: 01/28/02 |
| West Virginia Wesleyan College (WVWC) received grant monies awarded from Dance USA's National Collegiate Choreographic Initiative in conjunction with the National Endowment of the Arts. This award offers visibility both at the state and national levels, thus providing greater expansion of recruiting opportunities for WVWC. This honor will enhance Wesleyan's new dance program, affording it a national reputation by combining the efforts of nationally known choreographers with community and collegiate dancers.
The concert will be held on WVWC's campus February 1-2, 2002. Mark Taylor, artistic director for Dance Alloy, will be creating the work. The concert will be the highlight of the WV Modern Dance Consortium, sponsored by the WV New Works Dance Project. The weekend's events will include modern dance and movement master classes presented by guest artists of companies invited to participate in the gala. Mark Taylor is internationally known as a choreographer and teacher of contemporary dance. Before joining Dance Alloy, he founded his own successful New York-based dance ensemble called Mark Taylor & Friends. His work has been performed in Great Britain, France, Estonia, Bulgaria, and the Soviet Union as well as in the United States. Mark Taylor has been recognized with several prestigious awards concerning performing arts and his first-rate contemporary dance. Companies that have been identified as performing in the concert are: feMo Dance Theatre from Huntington, W.Va.; Kitchen Sink Dance Theatre from Clarksburg, W.Va.; Kitty Clark and Cam Miller from Shepherdstown, W.Va.; and the Augusta Youth Ballet from Buckhannon, W.Va. The concert will not only fulfill local interests in exploring dance as a creative performance medium but also provide a wonderful educational experience. Dance Alloy was founded in 1976 and was dedicated to creating a company that would benefit both performers and audiences by expanding contacts between Pittsburgh dancers and the professional dance community regionally and nationally. Dance Alloy offers a wide variety of creative performance and has been very fortunate to embark on a series of cross-cultural collaborations. Alloy has a large dance center on 5530 Penn Avenue, which currently offers open rehearsals, showings of works-in-progress, and other informal dance programs at the Neighborhood Dance Center. The National College Choreography Initiative was made possible through the generous funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Target Stores, Marshall Field's and Mervyn's with support from the Target Foundation. |
