| Wesleyan Mentors Helping First Graders Develop Reading Skills released: 03/05/02 |
| Students in Mrs. Rebecca Wills' class at Central Elementary School and students in Mrs. Beverly Reger's class at Academy Primary work weekly with a mentor from West Virginia Wesleyan College to develop and improve their reading skills. Wesleyan students participating are enrolled in Mrs. Debbie Bush's class at the college that focuses on developing resources that are appropriate for meeting specific needs and interests of children. "This is a real win/win collaboration for both the Upshur County schools and our education students," said Dr. Lynn Rupp, chairman of the Education Department at Wesleyan. "Each first grader has a Wesleyan student who devotes time and energy to that student, and our education students see how to plan and to teach first graders." This project was funded by the West Virginia Department of Education IMPACT grant awarded to the Education Department. The purpose of this grant is to develop contextual learning programs. |
