| Julliard Graduate to Perform at Wesleyan released: 02/01/02 |
| In conjunction with Black History Month programming, the West Virginia Wesleyan College Arts Alive! series will present soprano opera singer Karla Simmons on Friday, February 8, at 8:00 p.m. in Wesley Chapel. Simmons recently graduated from the Julliard School, where she earned a bachelor's degree in music. She is currently studying voice with John Atkins. Simmons attended the New York City Opera Children's Chorus training program, where she performed as a soloist and chorister under director Mildred Hohner. Since the age of nine, Simmons has performed the "Star-Spangled Banner" many times at New York Mets' baseball games. She has won the Leontyne Price Competition, the Lena Horne Competition Scholarship, and the ASCAP Whitney Houston Award Scholarship. |
