WV Wesleyan College Names Four Outstanding Seniors

Four West Virginia Wesleyan College students have been honored as Wesleyan's 2002 Outstanding Seniors.

They were recognized at Wesleyan's annual Awards Convocation. Nominees must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.35, preferably above 3.50, must be involved in a variety of extracurricular activities, and must have served in significant leadership positions.

Honored this year as seniors who best "exemplify the high ideals Wesleyan strives to develop and foster" and who demonstrate an "uncommon commitment to academic excellence, participation in campus life, and service to the College" were:

Andrew Freeman, a biology major from Philippi, W.Va., president of Beta Beta Beta and member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Kappa Phi. He is listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and is in the Honors Program. Andrew was selected as the Outstanding Biology Major in his junior and senior years. He won the Hyma Award for Excellence in Chemistry as a freshman, sophomore, and junior.

William Lizor, a contract major in drama ministry from Sykesville, Md., was selected as Outstanding Communication Senior as well as Outstanding Theatre Arts Department Senior. He performed with the Concert Chorale, Concentus Vocum, and in numerous theatre productions. He is in the Honors Program, listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, and is a member of Alpha Psi Omega, Lambda Pi Eta, Phi Kappa Phi, and Omicron Delta Kappa. He was event coordinator for Wesleyan Survivor.

Anne Thornton, an elementary education major from Bucyrus, Ohio, member of the Percussion Ensemble, Concert Chorale, Sigma Alpha Iota, Alpha Lambda Delta, Kappa Delta Pi, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Phi Kappa Phi. Anne, a Bonner Scholar, was a Peace and Justice Coordinator and an Alternative Spring Break Coordinator. She has served as church pianist, piano teacher, and baton instructor. During her freshman year, Anne received the Outstanding Service Award, and she was later named Outstanding Sophomore Honor Student.

Abigail Woods, a music major from Vienna, W.Va., member of Sigma Alpha Iota, Concert Chorale, Concentus Vocum, Kappa Phi, and the Chapel Planning Committee. Abby served as accompanist for the WVWC Music Department and for the WVWC Theatre Department. She was also a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Kappa Phi, Mortarboard, and was listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Abby was selected as the Outstanding Senior in the Music Department. She won the Sigma Alpha Iota Scholastic Award and the William B. Hatfield Fine Arts Award. She was the 1999 MTNA Collegiate Artist State Winner, the 2000 MTNA Collegiate Artist Regional Winner, the 2000 MTNA Collegiate Artist National 2nd Place Winner, the 2000 WVMTA Collegiate Artist Winner, and the 2001 AGO Young Artist Competition Second Place Chapter Winner.
