School Alumnus Establishes Scholarship Fund at West Virginia Wesleyan College released: 06/06/02 |
| Dr. Charles
C. Taylor, a 1936 graduate of Parkersburg High School and 1940 graduate
of West Virginia Wesleyan College, recently amended The Charles C. Taylor
Scholarship Fund at Wesleyan to provide scholarship support especially for
graduates of Parkersburg High School who attend West Virginia Wesleyan College.
In 1993, Dr. Taylor initiated a permanently endowed scholarship for music majors. With the amendment, two scholarship tracks are now available: The Charles C. Taylor Vocal Music Scholarship and The Charles C. Taylor Music Major's Scholarship. The Charles C. Taylor Vocal Music Scholarship is awarded to Wesleyan undergraduates who are also graduates of Parkersburg High School and who were participants in the Parkersburg High School vocal music program. Recipients of this scholarship are not required to be music majors, but they are required to participate in the vocal music program at Wesleyan through their undergraduate careers. The other existing scholarship, The Charles C. Taylor Music Major's Scholarship, is awarded to Wesleyan undergraduates who are majoring in music or music education. In making awards, a preference will be given to music students who have attained at least junior status in the major field and are preparing for a career in vocal music or vocal conducting. There may be more than one recipient for each scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded for one academic year and may be renewed if the recipient remains in good standing and continues to meet other considerations for the award. Dr. Taylor, a retired professor of music education at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, currently resides in Murphysboro, Illinois. A former resident of Vienna, West Virginia, Taylor was a member of the Parkersburg High School Big Red Band and was active in the high school's vocal music programs. He graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College with a degree in music. As a Wesleyan student, he was a member of the West Virginia Wesleyan College Choir, directed by the late Marie Boette. Following service in World War II, he earned a master's degree and a doctorate in music education from Columbia University. "I received an undying appreciation for music and excellent preparation for my career in music education at Parkersburg High School and West Virginia Wesleyan College," Dr. Taylor said. "Now, this scholarship plan is a way for me to acknowledge the gifts both of those institutions gave to me. I'm delighted to be able to help encourage students who share my love for music."
