Approximately
ninety high school scientists and their teachers will gather this weekend
(February 15-16) at West Virginia Wesleyan College for the 37th annual
Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. The United States Army, Navy,
and Air Force Research Offices, the Academy of Applied Science, and West
Virginia Wesleyan College sponsor this event.
Eleven pre-selected finalists have been invited to give an oral presentation
of their original scientific research, beginning at 9:00 AM Saturday in
Hyma Auditorium of Christopher Hall. The winner at Wesleyan will become
eligible to compete nationally and could be awarded a $20,000 scholarship.
West Virginia has been richly blessed to have three first place winners,
and three second place winners during the last eight years. That currently
is the best record in the nation.
Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., Wesleyan chemistry professors, Dr. Rebecca
Bliesner and Dr. Steven Johnson will lead participants through a lively
series of "hands on" demonstrations based on chemical principles.
Dr. Rodger J. McCormick, Professor of Biology at Wesleyan is the Director
of the West Virginia Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. The public
is welcome to attend all of the above events.
Participating high schools include, John Marshall, Greenbrier West, Parkersburg,
Hedgesville, Mount de Chantal, The Linsly School, Jefferson, Magnolia,
Doddridge County, Midland Trail, Man, and Shady Spring.
