The West
Virginia Festival of Trumpets VII will be held Saturday, April 27, 2002,
in the Social Hall of the Benedum Campus Center at West Virginia Wesleyan
College. The purpose of the festival is to promote trumpet playing in
West Virginia by giving performers of all ages the opportunity to learn
more about the trumpet through performance and observation.
Activities for the day include two master classes, a student recital,
and the festival recital. Attendees may perform with the Festival Ensemble,
which will be featured during the festival recital.
Special guest artist Vincent DiMartino will be presenting a trumpet master
class at 9:00 a.m. Known internationally as a jazz and classical artist,
DiMartino has been lead and solo trumpet in the Lionel Hampton Band, the
Chuck Mangione Band, the Clark Terry Band, and the Eastman's Arranger's
Holiday Orchestra. He has also appeared as soloist with the symphony orchestras
of Cincinnati, Buffalo, Santa Fe, North Carolina, Orlando, Baton Rouge,
and Rochester, as well as with the Boston Pops.
Also, West Virginia Wesleyan alumnus Kenneth Rittenhouse will give a master
class at 11:30 a.m. Currently, Rittenhouse is a member of the United States
Army Band (Pershing's Own) at Fort Myer, Virginia. He has spent the last
11 years performing with the Ceremonial Band and the "Army Blues"
Jazz Ensemble, the army's concert band and brass band. Some of Rittenhouse's
main duties in the Army Band include playing "Taps" for army
funerals in Arlington National Cemetery, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier,
and for congressional funerals around the nation.
