| Wesleyan Department of Nursing Takes State-Wide Award released: 02/15/02 |
| The first annual "Spirit of Nursing Award" granted by the West Virginia Nurses Association was won by Wesleyan senior, Frank Ketterman at the state capitol during Nurse Unity Day on February 7. The academic competition was open to all nursing schools in West Virginia and involved both a poster and oral presentation regarding the nursing shortage. In a novel approach, the Wesleyan students conducted an original research project to gain insight into nursing's recent problem of attracting students into the discipline. Under the faculty advisory guidance of Dr. Judith Halle, Frank and his research team, Amanda Harvey, Brittany Rinard and Jamel Williams surveyed the current Wesleyan nursing students as to why they were attracted into nursing. They were pleased to find that the age-old Florence Nightingale desire to help others was still the dominant draw into nursing. |
