Governor Wise to Deliver Wesleyan's Commencement Address

Governor Bob Wise will speak at West Virginia Wesleyan College's Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 5, 2002, at 10 a.m. in Rockefeller Gymnasium.

"I am very pleased that Governor Bob Wise has accepted Wesleyan's invitation and will speak at our 112th Commencement ceremony," said President William R. Haden. "We are honored to have Governor Wise visit our campus, and I look forward to hearing the words of wisdom he will impart to our new graduates as they prepare to enter the world beyond Wesleyan." Governor Wise, the 33rd governor of West Virginia, took office in January 2001.

He is a long-time friend of the College and formerly served the 2nd Congressional District for 18 years. While in Congress, Wise demonstrated his dedication to higher education by using a portion of his salary to fund scholarships at every college and university in his district.Upon taking office as governor, he immediately launched a bold legislative agenda: funding the PROMISE Scholarships, stimulating economic development, and increasing the availability of health insurance to the state's children.

Wise grew up in Charleston, where he attended public schools. He is a graduate of Duke University and the Tulane University College of Law. Wise is married to Sandy Wise, and they have two children, Robert and Alexandra.A baccalaureate ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 4, at 8 p.m. in Wesley Chapel, with Bishop Janice Riggle Huie speaking. Bishop Huie was elected to the episcopacy in July 1996 and assigned to the Arkansas area, where she serves the North Arkansas and the Little Rock Conferences.

A noted speaker and experienced leader, Bishop Huie is responsible for 735 churches and approximately 147,000 United Methodists in the state of Arkansas. She currently serves as president of the General Board of Higher Education & Ministry.

She and her husband, Bob, have a son, Matthew.
