Both West Virginia Wesleyan College soccer programs produced NCAA Division
II All-America athletes during the 2002 season. On
the men’s side, senior goalkeeper Jorge Geddes was named first-team
All-America. This is Geddes second consecutive All-America honor. Last
year he was a third-team selection. Geddes, a Malawi, Africa, native,
dominated the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC)
in 2002, leading the Bobcats to a third consecutive conference crown with
11 shutouts and a .63 goals-against average.
The men’s All-America team also placed Bobcat senior defender David
Palmer on the second-team list. Palmer’s dominance as an attacking
midfielder helped Wesleyan become one of the best NCAA Division II defensive
teams in the country. Palmer is from Kingston, Jamaica.
The Bobcat women’s team was honored by freshman defender Ashley
Suarez’s selection to the third-team All-America squad. Suarez,
of Monore, NY, helped the Bobcat team to a healthy .63 goals-against average,
ranking them 14th in the nation for Division II institutions.
The All-America squads were announced at a news conference in Dallas,
Texas, on Thursday, Dec. 12.
The NSCAA/adidas All-America teams are determined through voting by NSCAA
member coaches from across the nation. The teams, from youth to NCAA Division
I, will be honored at the NSCAA/adidas All-America Luncheon, to be held
Saturday, Jan. 18, as part of the 2003 NSCAA Convention in Kansas City,
Mo.
