Wesleyan's Sleeth Gallery Opens for Faculty Show
released: 02/03/03
On Tuesday, January 21, 2003, West Virginia Wesleyan College (WVWC) opened the doors of Sleeth Gallery for the annual Faculty Art Show.

The event is designed to give the WVWC faculty members the opportunity to display their work to the public. Each artist comes from a distinctly different background, with unique talents and experiences. Often, among their teaching efforts, it is forgotten that they are established artists as well as teachers, and the annual exhibit is an ideal place for them to share their work as well as share a little bit about themselves.

Carol Pelletier, who serves as Sleeth Gallery's coordinator, has several of her pieces on display. Creating beautiful landscapes with oil paint, Ms. Pelletier draws inspiration from the surrounding area where she grew up in eastern Maine.

Pelletier stated, "Coastal Maine possesses a natural beauty that I try to portray in my work. The area had a strong influence in my life and continues to influence my artwork. Although I have a distinct visual image when I create each of my paintings, each individual viewer may look at them entirely different, and that is the very essence of art."
Bradley Oiler, Assistant Professor of Art, creates his artwork through a very different style. His work is created via digital images, each layered and blended together to create an image that contains several different thoughts and feelings. However, his inspiration is quite different than some artists.

"There has been a lot of changes taking place in my life during the past few years. I have tried to take some of those changes and put them into my artwork. Many of these changes are issues that face many people, and I believe that they can relate to each piece in most cases," Oiler said.

Margo Davis, the Art Department Chairperson, also has artwork on display. Her work is captured in a series of colorful photographs entitled "The Aesthetics of Everyday Life."

"Each picture captures a specific part of my life that I wanted to share in my work," Davis stated. "There are many things that are important to me in my life, and by sharing these I share a part of my life."

Adding the show's diversity is Kelvin Mason. His art is created by digital imagery, and then recreated in colored pencil. Using space mythology as his primary theme, Mason's art creatively and colorfully depicts events and ideas that have evolved through the exploration of space.
Many of the pieces on display are for sale by the artists. The Sleeth Gallery is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and is located on the first floor of McCuskey Hall.
