Wesleyan Professor Dr. Mark DeFoe Receives Artist Fellowship Grant Award
released: 02/24/03
Mark DeFoe, chairman of the English Department at West Virginia Wesleyan College, recently received a West Virginia Artist Fellowship Grant Award from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts, part of the WV Division of Culture and History.

The commission presented $35,000 to a group of 10 Mountain State artists. DeFoe received a $3,500 Individual Artist Fellowship for 2003. The fellowships are intended to support working artists for the purpose of artistic development.

Works were chosen in the categories of media arts, visual arts, non-fiction and poetry.
“I am pleased and honored to receive this recognition, particularly since West Virginia has many fine poets and writers,” remarked DeFoe. “Support of art and artists at all levels is important in building a healthy and creative society.”

This is the second time DeFoe has earned the honor, receiving a fellowship in 1998.
DeFoe has published four books: “Bringing Home Breakfast” (1983), “Palmate” (1988), “AIR” (1998) and “Aviary” (2001). In addition to having been a Bread Loaf Scholar, he has won awards from The Atlanta Review, Tulane Review, Black Warrior Review, Now and Then, A Smartish Pace, Appalachian Heritage and other publications

His poetry has appeared in more than 100 journals, including Paris Review, Kenyon Review, Sewanee Review, Christian Science Monitor and Kestrel.

DeFoe is on sabbatical leave this semester – writing and doing readings and writing workshops.
