Virginia Wesleyan College (WVWC) students recently competed at the annual
state meeting of the West Virginia Chapter of the Music Teachers National
Association (MTNA), held November 1-3, 2002 in Huntington, WV. MTNA sponsors a collegiate solos competition in conjunction with the annual conference. The soloists wishing to compete must perform a recital covering four periods of music lasting at least 30 minutes. Winners in the Mountain State division are recognized statewide, but do not advance beyond the Huntington competition. WVWC students Jeremiah Franks, a sophomore tenor from Elkins, and Shanna Babbidge, a junior soprano from Caribou, Maine, won first place in the Mountain State competition. Franks and Babbidge are students of Prof. William Whitesides and Prof. Caroline Dees, respectively. Also competing in this classification was Danielle Jones, a high school organ student of Dr. Melody Meadows. All these students were declared winners in their respective categories. The MTNA Division winners may continue to regional competition in January 2003. WVWC junior tubist Taya Radabaugh, of Grand Rapids, Michigan is a student of Dr. David Milburn. She will compete in January 2003 in the MTNA regional collegiate competition. This region encompasses the entire eastern seaboard from West Virginia to Maine. Also competing in the MTNA competition was another WVWC student of Prof. William Whitesides, junior vocal performer Kyle Hastings, of Georgetown, Delaware. He received alternate in the collegiate vocal category. Ms. Marguerite Bostonia, as adjunct piano teacher in Wesleyan's Music Department, accompanied all of Wesleyan's competitors to the competition. The large number of winners from the Wesleyan Music Department is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of its many teachers, and the exceptional talent of its students. |
