West Virginia Wesleyan College to Offer Outdoor Recreation Adventure to Incoming Freshmen
released: 07/22/03

West Virginia Wesleyan College is proud to offer a unique pre-orientation experience unlike anything else for their incoming freshmen this fall.

The incoming freshmen will have the opportunity to travel into the heart of West Virginia’s natural beauty to embark on a journey of bonding, learning, and most of all, fun.

The new students will travel to Hico in Fayette County for a whitewater rafting adventure on the Lower New River. The students will build trust and learn teamwork on a ropes course and share stories and songs around a bonfire under the clear starry skies of West Virginia.

This exhilarating (and safe) experience will give students the opportunity to learn about student life at Wesleyan and bond with new students from all around the country.

“I know this idea has been in the back of many people's mind here at Wesleyan,” remarked Outdoor Recreational Coordinator Ben Goodwin. “It finally got its spark this year and we were able to have it come together.

“Right now, it appears that we have around 40-45 people signed up for the trip which we find as a huge success. I hope this turns out to be a great opportunity for all involved.”

“Several colleges across the country have developed pre-orientation programs to help students develop immediate friendships and connections,” stated Bob Skinner, Director of Admission and Financial Planning. “There are a number of team-building activities and of course the highlight will be the trip down the Lower New River.

“It is our hope that these students will also help build more excitement with our Outdoor Recreation Program.”

Trina Dobberstein, Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students, added, "The pre-orientation outdoor experience is a great way for new students to meet others in the Class of 2007. The teamwork, camaraderie and fun that will accompany this experience will be invaluable as new students make that important transition to college life."

The students will leave at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 20 and will return to campus Friday night (August 22).
